Here is an interesting view. Helicopter rotor blade blade with tufts filmed in action. I have no clue whatsoever as to how they pulled this off in 1946, given the size of high-speed cameras of that time:

Re: Interesting Videos: The Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA)

Postby Johan G » Fri Oct 09, 2015 4:55 am

Learned something new today. NASA had a few Grumman Gulfstream II biz jets modified to mimic the Space Shuttle during approach and final (though not landing). They were called Shuttle Training Aircraft (STAs) and was used both for pilot training and for testing the weather conditions at the landing site prior to shuttle landings.

One source stated that to reach the high glide path angle, the main landing gear was lowered and the reversers utilized.

Anyway, here is a few videos:

View from the ground prior to the STS-117 landing.

Bonus video - The Shuttle Landing Facility, including also some data on the STA:

That looks like it would be fun in FG actually. I've been wondering this for some time, I wonder if it is possible to do 'fluffy' landscapes in FG to simulate the fluffiness of a rainforest landscape. The only thing I could think up is to use voxels, like the one in Commanche 3, it made for good simulated dense rainforest landscape.

The Dubai based Jetpack Team and an Emirates A380 join up in a carefully prepared demonstration flight.
Truly remarkable considering the fact that the minimum safe distance between an A380 and any normal airplane is around 1 mile, because of adverse turbulence.
A propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool.
When it stops, you can watch him start sweating.

Stumbled upon this when looking for something else:

Ever wondered what those tiny cheek canards on the Rockwell B-1 bomber do there?

In essence it is about reducing the crew fatigue from vibrations induced by aeroelasticity and turbulence working together to rattle the crew.

jeez, i had all but forgotten how ugly and nasty those B&W training films from the '70s were...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Some interesting Viggen videos I stumbled upon:

A tribute to one of the air force wings by the son of a pilot

Turnaround by conscripts (they could do this by a road in the middle of the forest as well)

Some great crosswind technique lessons from Cindy Hollman's YouTube channel. Great tip by Altster. :)

Taxi (3 min)

Takeoff (4 min)

Landing (5 min)

For some more videos on crosswind landing technique see this older post.

Bonus video: Left turning tendencies (14 min)

Edit (now 2019): Fixing broken links. Videos are still at her channel, but with other ID's. Also added the video about left turning tendencies.
