Crazy Landing Challenge - DC-3

Postby Foxtrot15 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 2:29 pm

Hi all, here's a challenge for everyone:

Level 1:
Land a DC-3 at VQPR under fair weather. Full-stop on runway.

Level 2
Land a DC-3 at VQPR under cross-wind conditions. Taxi to full-stop inside a hangar.

Level 3
Land a DC-3 at VQPR under cross-wind and poor visibility conditions. Taxi to full stop inside a hangar.

This may sound easy, but I had 16 tries before pulling off an acceptable landing.

Take a screen capture or send over an FGTape and I'll shoot it for you.

Let's see who can pull it off with less tries than me and the levels.

Challenge is open till end-February, after which I will hold a vote for the best landing.

You bet!! Here are some tips:
Landing speed at 75 knots, full flaps.
Keep your attitude at 0 degrees pitch, use power to control descent.
Land with two wheels only, steer while tail-wheel is in the air.
Flaps to zero on touchdown.
Tap breaks constantly.
Tail wheel down at 40 knots.

Great challenge!
I admit I did not have the guts to even try it with a DC-3 (I would have to develop a feeling for the DC-3 first), but landing at VQPR with my trusted DHC-6 is very interesting. Good grief!
I made it, but I had to work... this is a landing that is next to impossible in an unfamiliar aircraft.

As the saying goes, any landing you walk away from is a good landing ;-)

Here is level1:

This was my first try.
Then I tried level 2 with "Stormy Monday" scenario, but as on the ground, my plane decided to be not steerable anymore and I ended up on the apron.
