2016.1.0

Postby someguy » Tue Jan 12, 2016 9:14 pm

Since the version naming scheme has changed, I thought I'd start a new topic. :)

In today's Mac "nightly," pause is fixed (yay!), but still no particle effects, and PAPI/VASI is still broken (no red lights). In the launcher, parking positions appear and are selectable (yay!), but they still don't work (boo!)--aircraft spawn onto the default runway regardless.

The visuals just get better and better, simply delicious, which is why I'm sticking with the dev releases. The planes I use are perfectly flyable. No complaints, just feedback.

particles are generally considered broken and the core developers were even contemplating to deprecate them entirely, i.e. to redo the current integration (see the comments quoting Mathias, Tim and James): http://wiki.flightgear.org/Particle_system#Known_Issues

given that this issue has been around for years now, you probably don't want to hold your breath

The issue with the particle system has been around for years? I think the particle system was working with the c172p until mid December, for instance.

The particle system has always been quirky and doesn't really mesh well with the rest of the rendering framework as it relies on its own set of shaders which we can't configure, but that's not the issue now, it's broken by accident and there are attempts made to fix it.

and PAPI/VASI is still broken (no red lights).

Working fine here, I can't reproduce this.

I notice there are some sound clippings/distortions when the plane moves (using rumble.wav in the sounds folder). The wav file itself is fine, so I don't know where the clipping is from.

Remember that the coordinates must not contain 0.0 so for example (3, 0) can make the sound produce distortions. Use (3, 0.001) for example instead.

I paused the sim on a very low approach, and toggled the point sprite checkbox without unpausing (I couldn't do this until pause was fixed).

Using point sprites:

No point sprites:

PAPI point sprites used to be red. Now they just have a faint red glow around white lights, which is not visible until you get so close that they're no longer useful.

I've just checked that during the day, I can distinguish the colors from at least 4 miles out, during the night from at least 8 miles. I guess it's an acquired habit - you're used to seeing things a certain way and when that changes, it must be a bug.

I couldn't do this until pause was fixed)

ufo?

P.S.: If you want to make the point that you can't distinguish white and red lights, it's not terribly useful to post red-only screenshots :-)

Greetings from snowy Bergen:

Do I see red and white lights? Yeah, I do :-)

Here's what I see at Bergen, from a bit closer than yours:
Image

I positioned the UFO with point sprites disabled so I could see the PAPI colors, paused, then re-enabled sprites for the screen shot. The slight pinkish color is barely visible through clear air; it's a bit harder seeing much red through a windscreen.
