In order to help you, we need to know a lot of information. Make sure to include answers to at least the following questions in your initial post.

- what OS (Windows Xp/Vista, Mac etc.) are you running?
- what FlightGear version do you use?
- what graphics card do you have?
- does the problem occur with any aircraft, at any airport?
- is there any output printed to the console (black window)?
- copy&paste your commandline (tick the "Show commandline box on the last page of FGRun or the "Others" section on the Mac launcher).
- please upload a screenshot of the problem.

If you experience FlightGear crashes, please report a bug using the issue tracker (can be also used for feature requests).
To run FlightGear on old computers with bad OpenGL support, please take a look at this wiki article. If you are seeing corrupted/broken textures, please see this article.

Note: If you did not get a reponse, even after 7 days, you may want to check out the FlightGear mailing lists to ask your question there.

Rain visible through clouds

Postby gsagostinho » Sat Oct 31, 2015 9:31 pm

Today I was flying above the clouds on a rainy day and I noticed that I can see the rain through the clouds below (and the rain is also super bright when compared to the clouds around it):

Is this something to be expected with our current AW or is this affecting just me?

No, I don't see that on mine, but I might see it sometime. I will let you know if I do see it. It's just that I don't know if I had that type of rain rendering this time around.

Thanks MIG. I believe I was using the "Border of Low Pressure" or "Low Pressure" themes of AW.

I see water vapour from cooling towers through clouds. Airport buildings too. It gives the game away somewhat when you are trying to navigate in bad weather.

I think I told you already based on the colors - there's something going wrong here on your FG in that the rain layer isn't assigned to the ALS effect but rendered via the fixed pipeline fallback - as such, it gets wrong colors, wrong fog, wrong depth-ordering and wrong lighting.

Hm, come to think of it, there are also no clouds drawn beyond a modest distance, there's just the haze layer visible - what's your cloud drawing range setting?

It doesn't happen to me, and judging by some other screenshots I have seen it doesn't happen to others, so I don't really know what is different for you. We need something like a console error or another pointer to start to investigate.

Oh, didn't cross my mind it would be related to the pink rain I see sometimes, but of course it makes sense once you tell me that!

It was set to 10000m because recently I had deleted all my preferences trying to fix a bug with my Failure Manager, and I forgot to bring that value up. I normally use around 25000m.

Yeah, it seems my video card isn't very FG-friendly. I have this issue with the rain, the strange water colour that appear sometimes at low angles as well as those disappearing runway lights (but not PAPI nor city lights).

We can of course investigate this further if you'd have some idea about it, but to be frank I thought that this could have been a problem with the rain itself in FG and that's why I report. If I am the only one seeing this then there is much less priority in solving this, and I can live with it as well.

Please check if there's a related error - if not, then we let it be.

After browsing through some rain images in a meteorology book, I think I'll try to replace the current rain texture by a volumetric effect like the thruster flames use (of course some drivers won't eat that..., so I'll have to do it optional I guess...) - that should be configurable to represent accurate rain density and allow to animate the rain better.
