KHAF flooding solution?

Postby someguy » Thu Jul 02, 2015 5:18 am

I thought I remembered reading about an interim fix for the KHAF flooding issue, pending a complete rebuild of the world scenery system, but I can't seem to find it now.

Anyone? Bueller? Legoboy?

Thanks, I did see that. But I don't understand what he did. Perhaps if someone could explain it in English?

Hopefully the $FG_SCENERY wiki page would help solve this.

Edit: The point is to explicitly specify the $FGDATA/Scenery directory to use that default scenery rather than the Terrasync downloaded world scenery. This also fixes nasty problems of the runway being partly underground in KPAO (Palo Alto), KSQL (San Carlos), and a few other airports around the San Fran area.

Ah! Thanks so much, now I understand, and it works fine. In the new launcher, there's no need to use command line arguments for aircraft and scenery folders, but I had to delete my Terrasync folder entry first, add Scenery, then add Terrasync back in, since there is no way to change the order and new entries are always at the bottom.

There was a fixed shipped with the default fgdata data, while the data in Terrasync still ships with the faulty data. The new terrain generation will fix this bug worldwide in quite a short time.

Is there already a date known, when the next scenery version will be released?
Don't want to annoy you, I'm just curious ;)
A mile of road will take you a mile, but a mile of runway will take you everywhere.

I'd say when it's finished, as usual ;-) I'm not directly involved, as you know it takes a long time to generate the worldwide scenery, test it, and even to release it (given the size of the data and the hosting problems!).
We're now at the testing part, so it's still too early to say whether it'll be next month. I'd say before the end of the year, as if it comes earlier, we'll all be even happier!

Is there a particular reason for this? Lack of CPU power?

Maybe, but the immense size is a contributing factor. I beleive we are approaching the 1TB mark this next release?

the total sources hosted by google are over 1TB, IIRC... this was all brought up recently (back in feb or so) when gitorious and google code shut down forcing the move of the FGFS project to other hosts... due to the size and complexity of the scenery, google code was kind enough to keep that repo alive but the time is approaching when it will have to be relocated... one can easily find these discussions on GMANE or in the SF dev list archives...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
