You're more than welcome to join in! What are you interested in, or what did you specifically develop in said FSX product? (3D modeling, terrain generation, texturing, ...) Depending on that I could point to to some resources for FG.

thank you radi and Pakistan-1

I was mostly the data researcher and information processing since I know very well about my place.
Because the scenery that I made, was providing highly accuracy VFR environment in the area, so we can use Flight Sim to provide local flight training.

Other than Openstreet Map, some websites below have useful data:
http://www1.map.gov.hk/gih3/view/index.jsp
for coordinates
https://bmis.buildingmgt.gov.hk/eng/index.php
building database and heights

for development.. I can do
Ground vectors, DEM conversion, 3D models to BGL conversion, Satalie image placement

you may add me skype "jwancw" or facebook "jacky.wan@me.com" :)

Keep in mind that in order to be included in the official scenery, stuff added to the scenery must be compatible with the GNU GPLv2 license. ;)

Also note that some sources may not allow derivative products to be made (this applies for example to Google Maps).

Great, that actually fits quite well with what I think we currently need most: updated terrain for that region. But FG's toolchain is obviously quite different from FSX.

As stated earlier in this thread, there is updated landcover data somewhere, but I'm still waiting for it to be dug up :) For the time being -- if you're into terrain generation, please have a look at

http://wiki.flightgear.org/TerraGear
http://wiki.flightgear.org/TerraGear_GUI

Any updated terrain, even one using only OSM landcover, would be helpful at this time.

I LOVE Kai Tak...coming in on that crazy angle for a touchdown on Runway 13. I use Kai Tak as a training airport for those last minute maneuvers that are sometimes necessary. Thanks, guys!

"I LOVE Kai Tak"

Nice to hear that :)
If you are wondering why there hasn't been any progress done
it is because I have been very busy lately and We are still looking for 3D modelers to help us with this project .

Well, I'm rather busy, but I managed to
- built custom scenery, using landcover provided by statto and Martin
- "fixed" airport layout -- had to remove a taxiway because I couldn't create an airport with holes in it.
- add OSM forest/parks (some prominent ones are still missing)
- add osm2city buildings and roads
- add curved approach lights, based on OT-666's LOWI approach lights

I'll upload it tomorrow.

Here are a few things where anyone, in particular the interested Hong Kong locals, could help:

Image

1. As you can see, Kwoolon is rather empty in OSM. Go to openstreetmap.org and start mapping the buildings. It's really easy, and by far the quickest option to further populate our scenery.

2. Also, I'm not too excited about the accuracy of the digital elevation model. If someone could get a detailled elevation map, perhaps from HK's land surveying office, that'd be really useful. Pakistan-1, you said HK data prior to 1990s or so is public domain -- could you find me such a map?

3. I still need images of chinese looking facades. Search the net for suitable pictures, ask the owner for permission, and let me know once you've found some.

Here's the current package (24MB):

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/248 ... HXX.tar.gz

Contains lots of bugs, most notably
- so far I've only generated the VHXX airport in that tile
- osm2city buildings will likely overlap with terrasync buildings (which aren't included in the package)
- some landclasses might be missing
- some roads have funny elevation

BUT at least we now have water left and right of the runway.

Tested on 3.4, looks promising, I mixed unique objects and osm buildings (copied some stg lines and needed files/textures), at night it looks great too, but I think there is needed more light in the city, no substantial graphic and calculation impact on my computer:
At VHXX

some skyline shoots, we need more osm buildings:

Good job to all that have added information to OSM and doing osm2city better!
I think that can also be recreated in other big cities such as New York, London, Tokyo, etc.

You've found some great angles for screenshots, thanks!

True. Another thing where anybody could easily contribute -- create lightmaps for osm2city textures.

There is a big quarry near Kai Tak I think it will be awesome to add it in too :) Plus Hong Kong is starting to look like Hong Kong

ps there is a bridge at Kai Tak to connect the runway to the Stands at Kwun Tong and you spelled detail wrongly XD

No useless full-quote of images, please. It makes finding information for people reading a thread harder. And sorry, I know my English is abysmal. Yes, I mentioned above why I had to delete a taxiway (which is said bridge). Yes, I said some landclasses are missing -- I spend a lot of time looking at pictures and satellite images of that area.

Edit: Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh -- I'd just love to keep this thread a somewhat useful ressource, without much chit-chat, and I'd really appreciate some help with the points I mentioned above, other than 'hey there's a brige missing!'

I can do something: is it right if I start from these textures?: https://gitlab.com/fg-radi/osm2city-dat ... commercial
Are there some textures used more frequently than others?
Are there some instructions of how the lightmap is mapped to colors apart a couple of existing files marked with LM suffix?
