QZ 8501 - all my prayers to the victims and families!

2014 was a very bad year for aviation! :(

Yes and no. The total number of casualties (and consequently the media coverage and perception) may be higher than the past three years, but the number of fatal accidents is lower than ever. See http://aviation-safety.net/statistics/p ... php?cat=A1

Nonetheless every single accident is a sad event of course. :(

Bad year for South East Asia, or Malaysian aviation industry to be more specific and not least those affected and family. (AirAsia is based in Malaysia, or at least, the brand 'license' is).

From leaked radar images the plane appears to have slowed too much (350knots vs 500+ knots) at 36,000 ft.

Hi,

What I don't get is why there are no distress calls. For AF446 it appears, the crew was so busy with compter messages, they forgot everything else. And one of the MF-80 incidents mentioned in the article was because they had forgotten to switch on deicing, or so I have heard. Which then led to a number of simultan warnings and they lost the overview, but they had contact with the ATC and explained, they were unable to hold altitude, so there was some kind of distress call, even maybe not a formal declaration of an emergency. So, why no distress call in this case? Stall is one thing, but even then, the plane needs minutes to reach the sea surface ... and still no distress call! So stall couldn't have been the whole story, I guess?

I am assuming that the flight was upset so suddenly that they simply could not have time to reach for the radio, and by then the G forces could have flung their arms enough that they could not longer reach for it. By then worse things would have happened.

How does Airbus indicate a stall? Do they activate the stick shaker way before the real stall? Or does it just nose down correcting itself like I've read?

According to this page:
  • when in normal law, attitude and angle of attack are limited automatically;
  • when in alternate or direct law (= if multiple redundant systems fail), an alarm should sound ("crickets" + a synthetic "stall" voice).

Oh, the dreaded four-gear landing. :twisted: :wink:

Jokes aside, apart from the rather heavy touchdown they handled it quite well. Also I have rarely seen that many fire engines even at bigger airports.

I too thought the touchdown look a bit heavy.

The actual aircraft looks drunk! Funny... (to me)

Somehow the pilot still manages to make it look easy. Impressive. 8)

The video doesn't look as bad as the picture - I suspect they used the "extra dramatisation" filter in Photoshop.... 8)
