FlightGear 3.2 released

Postby Gijs » Sun Oct 19, 2014 8:47 pm

The FlightGear development team is delighted to announce the release of version 3.2! This new version contains many exciting new features, enhancements and bug fixes. Highlights in this release include an experimental aircraft manager allowing users to download and load aircraft in-sim, a very capable built-in HTTP server, built-in voice synthesizer for ATIS messages, and many improvements to the Canvas rendering framework.

See our release announcement for a complete list of changes.
Download your copy at the download central.

Note for Mac OS X Yosemite users
The default launcher fails on OSX 10.10, because it is written in ruby/cocoa and Apple took away the ruby/cocoa library in OSX 10.10. We are looking into a few ideas to see if we can find a quick workaround. In the mean time you can use one of the alternative front ends, or run FlightGear from the command line.

Note for RC2 testers
The final release is the same as RC2, so you don't need to re-install FlightGear.

First impression:

I updated and started some flights and compared frame rates, in both cases with minmal graphic settings:

LEBL area got me 18-20 fps with 3.0, now 5-6 with 3.2
KPHX 18-20 under 3.0 and funny, 20-22 under 3.2
EHAM 15-16 under 3.0, crash under 3.2 after I saw 2 fps

uh ... anything, we need to know, like no way to fly in Europe with a small gpu anymore?

Is this caused by the terrain itself, or the ground objects?

Also, what are your specs?

For a fair comparison you'll also need to use the same aircraft (and not one that has changed a lot, like the 777), weather etc. (couldn't derive from your post whether you did that). To see if the scenery is the culprit, use the same $FG_ SCENERY paths on both versions.

I am curious if anything at all has changed between rc2 and the release. If not i could save some time not installing the release.

Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Vincent, we just renamed RC2 -> Official release so there's no need to download again if you already have RC2 installed.

Personally im not seeing much of a difference between 3.0 and 3.2. Has the walker been implemented yet?

The walker was implemented in 3.0, you have to set the config file for it to work though.

Hiya, I would love to download 3.2. Is there a stable release available from a ppa? The only one I have so far found carries 3.0.0. as the latest.

Sorry, I was absent from the board for a few days due to events in the real world.

All the numbers, I gave, and it was really only a fisrt impression, were measured with the same plane, the 747-8vvip, for which I can vouch, NOTHING changed in a while, simply because I didn't come around to.
The culprit is probably the scenery because when I used instead the old scenery, I was back to the old numbers.
My configuration is

Ubuntu 14.04
on an AMD-A8-5500
a HD 5450
8 GB RAM
and aboutish 300 GB free harddisk space and a swap partition extra

The bottleneck, as figured in so many other issues is the graphics card, the 5450. Now, while I have an upgrade under way (a 750 Ti should arrive here next week), I wonder how many of the FG users have similar old and limited hardware and how the heavier scenery will influence the user-base. Seems to me, we have here some issues between graphics-quality and resources and this is kind of a now win situation because either the owners of weak hardware or the owners of state of the art hardware, one side will aways suffer.

Solution no 1: Send everyone the best processor and card possible along with instructions :P

Getting serious, about to install it and see what it is like.
