Hi John,

Do you mean that there is yet a newer version with more light over mp?

I have been flying the newer 747 for a while now and one thing is not quite right i think. You said the ground handling is better. That is true. I guess you did that with more grip on the tires. But together with that the touchdown has become less good. At touchdown there is still a lot of lift, so the grip of the tires should not be very effective. But when i touchdown now, it feels like there is immediately full grip of the tires, making a slight traversal landing ending in almost tipping over.

Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Vincent,

Take a look at $FG_ROOT/Aircraft/747-8i/747-8-main.xml line 207. It should look like this:
Code: Select all
<int n="0" alias="/sim/model/lights/strobe/enabled"/>

If it doesn't, then then there is a slightly newer version than the one you have with more functioning MP lights. Again, not complete, not fully tested, but getting better, I hope. There should be landing lights (the bulbs), nav lights, beacons, and strobes. Maybe the taxi light too.

For the ground steering, I added friction to the nose gear only, so there shouldn't be any change in the touchdown behavior regarding that unless you slam down the nose gear right after the main gear hit. I also added up to 8 degrees of opposite steer to the inboard main gear. This only kicks in when you turn the nose gear more than 13 degrees. I haven't added it yet, but the main gear steering should also have a speed restriction.

Cheers,
John

Hi John,

Just saw headlights, navlights, strobe and rotating red lights on a 747-8F. So you must be on the right track.

The touchdown thing is of course very subjective. But it is good to know that nothing changed on the main gear and the problem is my perception.

Hi John,

Maybe my perception is not completely wrong. Just now i saw what happens to the rear gear while i am correcting with rudder for the crosswind just before/on touchdown. The rear wheels steer so they go more cross into the traverse position i exactly try to correct at that moment. Could it be possible to have that steering only below taxi speeds? With a good margin: below 50 kts.

Kind regards, Vincent

Too bad you're not using JSBSim. Else you could've used the code from the 744. Maybe it can still serve as an example. I don't expect it to be much different from the -8 (if that's indeed true, your numbers seem to be incorrect). See line 1543 and further https://gitorious.org/fg/fgdata/source/ ... .xml#L1543

Hi Vincent,
There does need to be a speed limitation on the main gear steering, but I haven't set it up yet. On the -400, it deactivates when accelerating through 20 kts, and re-activates when slowing down through 15 kts. I'm going to go with those numbers, for the time being.

Hi Gijs,
You're right, I have the numbers wrong. The body gear doesn't turn until the the nose gear reaches 20 degrees, and the maximum angle on the body gear is 13 degrees.

The fix is in the works.

Cheers,
John

Hi John,

Please do post here if the wheels are fixed on touchdown. I am very keen on that because my joy of flying is the landing and particularly a smooth touchdown.

Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Vincent,
This is a version with the fixes for the body gear steering and speed limitations in place. I have not tested it beyond making sure it doesn't cause FG errors, so I haven't put it in the main 747-8 branch yet. It'll be a week before I can fully test it, but please go ahead and give it a try.
John

Hi John,

Great for your quick response. The main gear looks good, fixed at high speeds. Had a lovely strong crosswind landing just now. And on taxing slow, the steering starts working. Thanks.

Kind regards, Vincent

Hi John,

The 747 is still going good. Got a KLM and Air France livery made by sig-nal here:

http://iveze.nl/data/747-8i_Liveries_KLM_AF.zip

If you think they are good, you may want to include them in your distribution. At least we use them a lot, so it would be nice if we do not look white to others.

Hi Vincent,

I saw some screenshots with the KLM livery on the developed airport map. I was going to ask about that. KLM has one of my favorite liveries. One comment on the AFR livery: I think the fuselage is white all the way around without the gray paint on the bottom. Other than that, they look great, and I'll get them both included in the git when I finish up the MP fixes and gear testing.

Thanks for making and sending them!
Cheers,
John

I fixed up the MP stuff. The lights, cabin windows, and shadow should all work over MP now. I also sent the nose and main gear steering over MP so the bogies turn.

I tested out the new main gear steering set up and I'm happy with the way it's working.

Another new thing: added inboard aileron animations and aileron droop associated with the flaps.

Hi John,

Everything looks fine. A very good version this is. Even Jomo gets to see the lights.

Saw you today flying, but there seemed something wrong with the mp text. I only got one message from you saying Hello Vincent. After that nothing. Did you get my text messages at all?

Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Vincent,
I only saw 2 messages from you: "Who are you?" and another replying to the ALL CAPS guy. I did see your shadow pass over head while I was taxiing and you were landing at Travis AFB. That was pretty cool. Caught this screenshot too.
Cheers,
John

Hi John,

Great looking plane now, on your pic. I said quite a few things more, so there was definitely something wrong with mp text both ways.

Kind regards, Vincent
