The Swedish Saab 37 Viggen combat aircraft:

News:
The JA-37 has been renamed to JA-37Di and gotten its glass cockpit.

The easiest way to obtain this package is through automatic download through the launcher.

Download from hangar (will often be older versions): https://sites.google.com/site/fghangar/.

Re: My first attempt at an aircraft

Postby jam007 » Sat Feb 16, 2013 12:36 pm

Working on getting it to run.
I noticed that the directory is named Ja37 but the paths in the files are Aircraft/ja37/...
The textures fuse.png and wing.png are named with capital first letter but in the ac-file they are not.
Same problem with for InternalFlame.xml and ExternalFlame.xml
On windows this does not make any difference (if I remember correctly) but in other OS it does.
Maybe change the name of the aircraft directory? (As the name of the real aircraft is JA 37 I would suggest JA37 or Saab-JA37.)
A suggestion:
You do not have to give the Aircraft/ja37/ in the file path for the different files under the aircraft’s own directory, just the relative path in that directory (eg. Models/ja37-model.xml).
By only using the relative path you will make it easier to use the aircraft in different FG configurations.

Edit: And PILOT.png that is named pilot.png in the xml

Should be fixed now, but a little hard to test with a windows system.

Put in a working HUD based on Canvas.

It operates more or less like the aircraft manual describes, beside from landing and combat systems.

Beware its in metric units though.

If you are planning on making this available under the terms of the GNU GPL and eventually as part of the official FGDATA distribution, it would be great to add more details on your work to our wiki: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Aircraft and also to the newsletter (see my signature).

That was my plan.

But the 3D model is not GPL, I have tried to contact the author, but e-mail got sent back. :(

However, I can put in the DATCOM generated AC3D model perhaps, but its rather ... simple. Don't know if you would want to have such an ugly aircraft in your list?:

it seems there are various JA37 3D models available out there, while many of them are clearly not FREE - you may still be lucky by getting in touch with various authors and maybe even showing them a youtube video of their 3D model in use in FlightGear.

I managed to get an author to allow me to GPL his plane into Flightgear. :)

It is rather pretty, in my opinion.

Yes, now that it is GPL 2, I would like that eventually.

So what is the standard procedure here, do I clone fgdata, and work on the plane in the clone?

I noticed, not alot of people have made clones of fgdata, alot less than I think is currently working on aircrafts.

Is there some suggested way? It would be nice to work on a remote repository, so I can easy see what changes I make, and also will serve as backup..

edit: Ah there is a number that show alot more clones, can only get it to show 10 though. Anyway, will make a clone.
