The pilot, flying solo, was forced to circle the airport for five hours to burn off fuel.

Plenty of time to think about all that could go wrong on touchdown :?. He did an excellent job on staying calm!

If I had to have a wheel missing I sure would have hoped it to be the nose wheel. For a main wheel missing this is an excellent landing, a lot less dramatic than I feared.

I must say, he handled himself pretty well, but why didn't he shut down the engine after touchdown? If something went even more wrong and the wing snapped under the pressure (probably not likely, but it coulda happened) that'd probably lead to a write-off. Well, at least the landing went smooth and it'll probably be a quick and easy repair job.

Oh, and as I've heard on the news by walking around the student lounge at college over the past two days, two JAL 787s had two separate incidents at BOS; the first was an electrical fire with one of the batteries in the cargo hold (it was largely contained to just that battery, even without the Massport fire crew's help) and the second was fuel leaking while taking off. Both flights did make their way to Tokyo after some unintended delays, but... two incidents in two days with two different aircraft of the same type at the same airport, and both aircraft are operated by the same airline? That right there is some bad luck.

Don't you mean before touchdown? He did turn the engine off after the plane came to a halt, but doing that earlier could prevent some engine damage (had the nose landing gear failed).

He may loose some avionics if he had shut the engine down early. If had to go arround, it might also have been inconvenient turning it into a glider.

He was going in anyway...

He burned as much as possible fuel, i think he was not thinking about any goaround...

And at this point i guess you don't give a s... to the avionics... You are focused on the attitude of the plane., no need of any indication of temperature, Altitude, vor, radio...etc... Only true instruments at that point are your eyes and your ass...

Yes.. Door Opened (good thing), Cutting engine, Positionning the prop horizontally with the starter (for a 2 blade), check Belt... Okay i exagerate :D

But looking at the video i guess i would have done a bit different.... Rudder is on the left and for sure he used the brakes... And this is why he made this hard left turn.

For me, Plane banking on the left (Wheel remaining side) as long as possible... Rudder on the right (to keep the plane on the line and using the cinetic force after touch down as turning to the right will put main efforts on the only wheel), and the remaining left brake as late as possible (one wheel braking won't help much) mainly for keeping the plane going straight...

But it's easy to critiize aftermath... A good pilot is a pilot alive.

I would be careful if doing maintenance on that aircraft for months to come, maybe he was not alone... :?

Captain loosing his mind on passenger flight, is tricked by co-pilot to leave the cockpit and restrained by passengers till emergency landing. :?

Here's a dusty landing with a Douglas DC-6:

Sim had one of those Super Cub demonstrations over here, but I reply in this topic instead.

Super Cubs are impressive...

...but not alone.

Human powered helicopter taking off:

They are students from the University of Maryland trying win the Sikorsky Prize promised by the American Helicopter Society (AHS) to the first team that can keep a human power helicopter hovering above 3 metres within a 10 metre box for more than 1 minute. It's a $250,000 cash prize.

Giving that poor fellow a tattoo in the back off a car in a bumpy ride like the second car is nothing short of inhumane. :(

The rest of it is... interesting, in a typical TopGear way.
