Wiki does not allow usernames with multiple digits

Postby jharris1993 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 10:27 pm

Issue:
When I attempt to register to use the Wiki, it "bans" my typical username "jharris1993" since it has "multiple simultaneous digits"

This puzzles me.

Of course, I have to respond to an activation e-mail, answer the question of the day, and successfully navigate the captcha - so why are multiple digits an issue?

Having - hopefully! - proved that I am actually a flesh-and-blood human being, may I use that username on the Wiki? It would be such a pain to have to maintain a half-dozen or so differing usernames. . . .

Thanks!

Welcome Jim!

Because spambots (or some low paid humans), believe it or not, can bypass al that. Just proofing that you are a human does not proof that you won't spam :-)

Please register with a random username and let me know, so I can try to rename it (to jharris1993, I guess?).

Cheers,
Gijs

PS: I've always wondered what drives people to have their year of birth in their username...

Gigs,

Having read some of your posts on (one of the) "How to improve Flight Gear" threads, I admire both your patience and tact. Having been both a sysop (of several BBS's) and moderator of several fora, I can appreciate the effort it takes to mantain a semblence of order while remaining civil. My hat's off to you!

Re: Year of birth in my username?
Were that true, it would be closer to 1492 than 1993! In this case, I honor a wonderful (and equally patient!) woman by using the year we were married in my "stock" username.

Re: Spambots, et. al.

A friend of mine has a favorite quote, which he uses often: Make something more idiot proof and evolution will come up with better idiots!

Re: User name.

Thanks! I'll do just that.

Done. It's "jimrh" If you could change it to jharris1993, it would be appreciated!

Thanks again!

Ok, please try to login as jharris1993 now. It should only block registrations, but your the first with a renamed "illegal" username, so we'll see if it works :-)

Both it, and you, worked like a champ! I was able to login using the "illegal" :P username.

Thanks again!
