How do I upload graphics for embedding in a wiki?

Postby macnab » Fri Nov 16, 2012 2:48 pm

I can see how to reference them fro examples and the MediaWiki site, but I can't work out how to upload them.

See http://wiki.flightgear.org/Help:Upload (the link to the upload form was missing, just added it to the top of the article :P). The link was/is also displayed in the menubar on the left, under "Toolbox".

Problem choosing "Licence". They are screenshots of 3rd Party software. The local supplier gave permission, provided there was no negative advertising. Can't find anything suitable in the template.

You can select any license and edit the image page (eg. removing the license template) after uploading.

Sounds like you need to add some custom license then...

This is a problem in general - screenshots of software in operation. Been reading some articles - screenshots are considered "fair-use." Some software companies don't like it, in this case I was given permission.

But that doesn't mean the images can be used willy-nilly by anybody, as GPL basically allows. What we need is a copyright tag that is along the lines of "Permission granted for use in this article only." Difficult to enforce, when people know that FG is GPL - they are not going to check the tags of any pictures.

The article would need a disclaimer stating that the images are not available for use. But they are in a central repository, not in the article.

In the meantime, maybe I should flag the wiki as WIP and say the screenshots are still coming.

Text is available under the GNU GPL Version 2; additional terms may apply. See Terms of use for details.

The Terms of use clearly state that images are available under a variety of licenses, which you can find on the images' page.

You cannot prevent people from re-using your images, but you can make it impossible for them to do it legally (by adding a license to the images' page). I've just created a license template that only allows the re-use of the image on the FlightGear wiki. You can attach it to your image by adding the following tag to your image page:
Code: Select all
{{NoRe-use}}

That will add the following license disclaimer to the images' page: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Template:NoRe-use

Adding the template to images. Doesn't show banner, shows description.
