Caribbean Scenery *Beta*

Postby statto » Thu Sep 11, 2008 4:35 pm

Hello all,

Here is beta scenery for St. Maarten and St. Kitts and Nevis. The landclass has been totally redone by hand and now is much more accurate.

Grand Case Airport, St Maarten, before:
GrandCase_Before.jpg

Grand Case Airport, after:
GrandCase_After2.jpg

DO NOT OVERWRITE YOUR EXISTING SCENERY. I would place this in your scenery folder next to your Terrain and Objects folders and update your FG_SCENERY variable to get this to work, or better yet, from the command line. More information is here:
http://www.flightgear.org/Docs/getstart ... rtch3.html

For example, on Ubuntu, I have updated the file ~./bashrc to include the following:
FG_SCENERY=/usr/share/games/FlightGear/Scenery/caribbean-GPL:/usr/share/games/FlightGear/Scenery

alternatively, you can load from the command line:
fgfs --airport=TKPK --fg-scenery=/usr/share/games/FlighGear/Scenery/caribbean-GPL:/usr/share/games/FlightGear/Scenery
(replace the folders with your folders)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another note: adjacent, uncovered scenery is 'under water'. This is the reason why this is a 'beta' edition - I will be going through and fixing these islands, but for now, the scenery works if you want to fly into St. Maarten, St Kitts or Nevis...and NOT Anguilla. Sorry.

you can download the file from here:
http://www.stattosoftware.com/caribbean-GPL.zip

Available Airports: TKPK, TKPN, TNCM, TFFG

Please enjoy!

Nice :D Real beaches to park a floatplane on.

Are you changing any runways or taxiways :?: If so, I will have to redo the ground networks.

Only at Nevis, where the airport is a 'default' airport with the parallel taxiway.

Thanks! I'll download it straight away. I spend a lot of time in the Caribbean nowadays, it's a nice place to fly.. I usually use Bermuda as a base. MDSmith uses it too, he made an ATC for Bermuda Intl. :D

I have just finished Anguilla. I will digitize St Eustatius next so to complete the St Kitts file.

My hope is that these islands make it into the next world scenery release.

I see no reason why this should not happen .... and I'm the person to roll the packages :-)

Hi Statto and others,

A great thanks for your hard work on FG Carribean Scenery, it looks great. Have you been working to write kind of a full tutotial to explain how to do it ? On what OS are your working ? As the coastline has been much improved, what coastline data have you been using ?

Thanks !!

I'm using QGIS on Linux. I am just digitizing polygons off of satellite photos (downloaded from the link found on www.custom-scenery.com) and assigning them a landclass feature. Martin derives coastline data off the outline of the shapefile - I digitize lakes but not oceans.

St Maarten was the 'guinea pig' and since then we've found if you want to digitize land, you have to do it in ¼ by ¼ degrees at the smallest, which makes the Caribbean a perfect place to work quickly.

Once I finish I load the shapefile up in GRASS, dissolve, and extract by landclass, saving the extractions into different shapefiles (so files get broken into stmaarten_town.shp, stmaarten_forest.shp, stmaarten_airport.shp).

I've recommended FGIS to people who are interested in creating scenery in the same manner in Windows.

Hi again Statto.

I am currently building a page on the French Wiki on how to achieve what you've done. Assuming that, once this is written, there will be more and more people ready to help and improve it, from the Landsat to the final terrain compilation using Terragear-cs.

I took a French example and wrote the process in French, but I'm sure you'll understand. For the moment, I got all the Georeferenced TIFFs ready, and I have QGis and Grass set up. Would it be possible for you to explain a bit more what you do in QGis to the raw TIFFs you import ?

The Wiki URL is here : http://fr.flightgear.tuxfamily.org/doku ... ure_du_sol

Thanks in advance,

Oliver

Please translate it to English for the English wiki, even more people will read then!

Note that Stuart has already started a tutorial on creating Scenery on The Wiki - from VMap0 files, though.
This probably just needs a bit of maintenance, otherwise we'll soon see the well-known Wiki-effect here as well, having half a dozend of documents on the same topic and nobody having a clue which one is really valid ....
