FG2.8.0: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, ... help needed!

Postby ThorstenB » Sun Jul 08, 2012 3:17 pm

We're getting closer to releasing FG 2.8.0 (release scheduled for mid August). FG 2.8.0 restores a lost feature allowing to translate the FlightGear menu.

However, we need your help to translate the language resources!

We still have some language resources, but they are outdated and haven't been used for years. We really need to revise and extended them to properly cover all menu items.

Please help if you're a native speaker of any of the languages below:
  • Download the files listed for your language.
  • Open the file with a text editor.
  • Follow instructions inside the file (replace the "???" entries with appropriate translation).
  • Post the update files here (or if you know to use Git, place a merge request on https://www.gitorious.org/fg/fgdata).
Dutch: Dutch translation is complete! Thanks to Gijs! Bedankt!

Other Languages:
Due to a fixed, limited character set, FlightGear only supports plain ASCII characters and its Latin1/ISO-8859-1 extension - which covers Western European languages only (Portuguese to German, Italian to Norwegian). So, for FG 2.8.0 we are limited to those languages (list of languages which would work well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin1#Languages_with_complete_coverage). If you want to add support for any of these languages, then download the files for any of the languages above - and translate all items.
For next year (FG 3.0?) we hope to have a larger upgrade of the GUI code available, which should then allow arbitrary fonts and languages (Chinese, Japanese, Russian, ...).

If you have installed FG 2.8.0 pre-release, you can also test the resources straight away (update the files in the FlightGear data directory below Translations/<language>/...). Note, currently only the main menu and command-line help is translated - not the GUI dialogs itself. This will also change with a future version.

Thanks!

One thing to add: start the translation with the "menu.xml" file - this is the most important bit. And please supply any updates even if you don't have time to finish it all - someone else might continue... ;-)

Yes, as a plain text ASCII file please - just as the original (except for the translations ;-) ).
Grazie mille!

Zbyszek and longfly: thanks a lot for your updates! Looking forward to the options translations ;-).
Adil: not sure what you mean with "Word xml". But if I you have trouble with the text editor, then just provide any format you have - I'll see if I can open and convert it.

Still hoping for anyone to pick up the Spanish translation. Hablas español? :D

Adil, hm, it's an XML file but it's a MS Word specific XML format, which then contains raw text data - which in originally also resembled an XML file... In short: it's a bit messed up ;-).

Here's what I think will work fine: go back to MS Word, then select "Save As..." and save the file in "ASCII" or "plain text" format (Word should offer some an option to choose the file format when saving). You should get some file named "Translations_it_options.txt" (.txt file ending). From what I see, this will work - since the text inside Word is already the XML data - so saving plain text will leave us with the right bit.

Already thanks for your contribution - it's most welcome! :)

Adil, unfortunately I'm getting an "Error 403: It seems you don't belong here" error with the new link. Can you double-check the link - or make sure the file has "public" access? Access to the first file still works fine...
