When will 850 apt.dat be released?

Postby Hyde » Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:11 pm

I was told that switching to 850 format is pretty close. I just want to know when will it be scheduled?

2.6.0 already supports it. On the FlightGear side of things, all you need are textures for the lines.
The tools to generate the scenery need to be able to build airports in the 850 format though. And do so reliably, clean, without errors, for all airprots around the globe. Which is a huge task. And then you can re-generate the entire world scenery. Interesting subject then is how to provide "old" scenery for older versions of FlightGear that don't have the right textures (and I think there was also a change in btg format?)...

Since scenery is shipped apart from the programm (except for the base package), a "release" of 850 airports could be any day, whenever it is ready. You can follow the progress at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13240

I suppose he was talking about a standard thing, not an option ;)

Where can I get those textures?

I assume that tool is 'terragear-cs', right? Again where can I get this tool. I can not find in the https://gitorious.org/fg/terragear-cs.

And preparing SRTM files and AptDat850.zip is enogh to build?

The textures are what's been added to 2.6.0, so no need to download them ;) (agree, "all you need" wasn't a good wording :P). You'll find them under Textures/Runway
If you have no experience with normal terragear, I wouldn't advise to try the experimental one yet... I myself don't know how to build TerraGear, so I'm stuck to 810 for now. But I tested some 850 airports.

I'm having a little trouble understanding the quoted post. This is what I got out of it:

  • FlightGear v2.6.0 can read 850 apt files and provides textures for 850 apt files.
  • One can only get 850 apt airports with the experimental version of TerraGear

Does this mean that in a future version of FlightGear, the included version of TerraGear will support 850 apt airports? And, once that happens, then will TerraSync automatically download 850 apt files as they become available?

If all my guesses are right, then at some future date, I will start a future version of FlightGear, pick say, KSFO, and discover that the taxiway markings are curved.

Nope. What it means is that if an airport, say, EGKK, receives a facelift to the new 850 apt.dat format, as it has recently, then you can download it and install it and bam, it'll display with the curved lines etc.
You get what I mean, right?

Cheers,
Sam.

I'll test that out.

Does that mean my happy scenario won't come to pass? Incidentally, I was poking around the FlightGear wiki and found this phrase:
FlightGear model download available per seperate download or TerraSync. The related FlightGear scenery tile is w010n50.

I've enabled TerraSync but I don't see the curved lines/etc. so does that mean that TerraSync is behind somehow? When are updates released for airports via TerraSync? (I realize that "released" includes updating the server side copy and then waiting for everyone to update their copies of the airport via TerraSync or by re-downloading the scenery tile.)

That's because 850 hasn't been globally released into the main repo. That line comes from the London Gatwick wiki page. If you want an 850 layout, then check my signature below.

Q: Do we have a plan to release the next world scenery?
A: yes.
Q: When will it be ready?
A: When we are able to generate it without the tools crashing.

It's not so much the 850 airports now, but the surrounding terrain. We are testing the tools on large datasets now and fixing bugs as they come up. We are certainly much closer now than we were 6 months ago :)

It's my hope to have at least started the official build before 3.0. I'm not even sure how long it will take the tools to generate the whole planet. This depends on the decided upon vector data. It takes 2 days to generate 25 sq degrees of terrain using clc2006 data, and OSM motorway, trunk, pri, sec, ter.
