Red Bull Air Race

Postby Couby » Wed Jul 20, 2011 6:14 pm

Hi,

I read about red bull air race FlighGear capabilities on the wiki : http://wiki.flightgear.org/Red_Bull_Air_Race .

I'm unable to get rbar plugin working.

I'm using GIT version, is it still compatible ?

I'd like to build a dedicated package with just the necessary to race.
After that I intend to build a small website where sharing tracks and organising boards for rankings.

If there are people interested in such project, support is welcome  .

For information I looked about FSX and X-Plane RBAR, but I'd prefer organising something with a free product like FG. All the more the quality of this open sim is better and better...

Hi :)

First I need to succed in making the rbar plugin for FG working  .

I followed the dedicated webpage but without any success :? .

I'm using GIT version under windows.

My first objectiv is to make it easier playing such races.
For that I think a one click install add-on is a first step.

So how to get this plugin working ?
How to sort what I missed and where ? :?

I don't have any choice to choose the rbar, nor rbar menu items.

I'm not sure to understand well the :
create a directory rbar under your HOME/.fgfs directory

I created this directory in my home -> i:\FlightGear\rbar . Can it be the problem ?

Not sure to have well understood your question :? .

If it was "do you know who made it, I'll contact him if you want."

I think it is Torsten who made it.

I don't know if we can. It is not possible to send him PM or email via the forum :? . Maybe because he would be overcrowded of demands.

Waiting for any help in that field, I think I'll start working on the website.

Edited : I had a doubt on a point, with a try (move of rbar directory in my i:\FlightGear\data) it works now 8) .

Thanks :).

A reminder of the RBAR dedicated page : http://www.t3r.de/fg/fgfs-rbar.html .

The installation procedure I followed with what I did precisely :

Dead link for me, but that's ok done via http://www.flightgear.org/Downloads/scenery-1.0.1.html .

or the improved landsat satelite image based scenery here: ftp://ftp.ihg.uni-duisburg.de/FlightGea ... 518.tar.gz

Files being smaller I think they have less details. So I didn't install. If I'm wrong and they are better, would be cool to know  .

get the fgfsdb scenery objects here: http://flightgear.stockill.org.uk/download/e010n50.tgz

Dead link for me, but that's ok done via http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/download/ .

Dead link for me, but that's ok done via http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/downl ... Models.tgz

copy rbar.nas to your FGHOME/Nasal directory

I think it's ok, did it in my i:\FlightGear\data\Nasal directory.

copy RedbullRedPylon.ac to FGROOT/data/Models/fgfsdb

I have a i:\FlightGear\data\Models, but no i:\FlightGear\data\Models\fgsdb.
So I created it and copied files in.

copy RedbullRedPylon.xml to FGROOT/data/Models/fgfsdb

I think it's ok, that depends on the point just before.

copy arrow.ac to FGROOT/data/Models/Geometry

That's ok, done.

create a directory rbar under your HOME/.fgfs directory

The point I mentionned earlier.
My problem is fixed, instead of creating i:\FlightGear\rbar, I had to creat i:\FlightGear\data\rbar :).

copy Berlin_2006.xml to your HOME/.fgfs/rbar directory
copy SanDiego_2007.xml to your HOME/.fgfs/rbar directory
copy SanFrancisco_2006.xml to your HOME/.fgfs/rbar directory

Done.

Another point :
--prop:/sim/rbar/home=rbar

Added it to the command line via fgrun. That works.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, now I'll work on a simple website dedicated to that project.

How would you like to contribute Boeing ? As a simple racer or more ?
Which OS are you using ?

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there was a heated debate some time ago mainly about the use of the Red Bull logo. It ended after someone mailed Red Bull about the issue (see this post).

My suggestion would be to do a different or only similar logo, and name. (What about Red Bear Air Race)
Low-level flying — It's all fun and games till someone looses an engine. (Paraphrased from a YouTube video)
Improving the Dassault Mirage F1 (Wiki, Forum, GitLab. Work in slow progress)

If only Dieter was kind enough to let us use the logo.
I like the idea though.

Hi.

Possible I have better news :).

The purpose for the use of the logo is not the same (if I've well understood the related messages you're refering to Johan), and my approach is a litle bit different.

What I'd like to do is to colaborate with the Virtual Red Bull Air Race project which is already introduced to Red Bull Air Race GmbH : http://thomaspiriou.free.fr .

I just got in touch with Thomas today who answered me he's colaborating with a VA and that he doesn't know if his mods (designed for FS9) would be usable with FlightGear. He doesn't really have Internet access right at this moment, he may answer more precisely later.
I presented him what I'd like to do and how.

We'll see if it is feasable...

And if not, I have to admit I'm really interested in participating to the "developpement" of a FlightGear air race. So calling that Red Bear Air Race, I would say why not  . Yet If we have to go that way, I would prefer something really different in order to avoid any problem, waste of time and energy... :)
