FG 1.0/2.4 portability?

Postby rico001 » Fri Jul 15, 2011 5:18 pm

Version 1.0 of fightgear is easy to make portable, I think. You simply use a batch file instead of fgrun. I made a slimmed down portable version of FG1.0 if anyone wants to host it? I couldn't get the Boeing 787a wingtrails to work. It is handy for troubleshooting purposes or quick install...

now on sourceforge, not updated with below, yet.
The hidden roaming user appdata that exists might conflict with it, for example I wasn't able to use the 'v' after I had also installed a 2.4 git version

Changes to binary files :
Code: Select all
Added mulicore support in rendering of properties.xml – line 101  <multithreading-mode>AutomaticSelection</multithreading-mode>  (probably not needed)

Installed with OpenAL
Put all the bin and win32 files in the flightgear dir
removed bin & win32 directories
Took AI scenarios out of AI directory
Removed fgrun.exe
Removed unins000.dat
Removed unins000.exe
Removed js_demo.exe
Removed fgadmin.exe
Removed OpenALwEAX-11.exe (OpenAL EAX installer)
Removed scenery batch file and put that Scenery directory in with the rest in the Flightgear dir.
Took out pdf in docs directory
Left in Aircraft and folders:
c172
c172p
787
Generic
Instruments
Instruments-3d
UIUC – For lighter then air aircraft only (not necessary)
pa24-250 (added for 787)  Added dme.ac from SenecaII fixes wing error
pa28-161 (added for 787)  Added dme.ac from SenecaII  fixes wing error
Batch file Begin -------------
fgfs.exe --fg-root=data --fg-scenery=data\Scenery --aircraft="787-ANA" --airport=KSFO --control=joystick --disable-random-objects --disable-specular-highlight --prop:/sim/frame-rate-throttle-hz=120 --prop:/sim/hud/draw-fps=1 --disable-ai-models --timeofday=noon
pause
REM for multiplayer
REM http://wiki.flightgear.org/index.php/Howto:_Multiplayer
REM --multiplay=out,10,server.ip.address,5000
REM --callsign=anything
Batch file End -------------
Add GPL and OpenAL License in docs folder

Unless I've missed something: FG is quite portable, as long as you reassign the paths to the executable and FGdata folder in the launcher after having moved the folder(s).

it is generally portable, but not as much as originally - simply due to the number of dependencies, DLLs/DSOs, configuration files and $FG_ROOT obviously.
The configuration/navdata cache being increasingly important - however, it would require only 5 lines of code to allow fg-home to be configurable via a CLI argument (if it isn't already...), so that you could even keep everything on a USB stick
Please don't send support requests by PM, instead post your questions on the forum so that all users can contribute and benefit
Thanks & all the best,
