Bombardier CRJ700 series/CRJ900 replacement

---

Looking back on my CRJ900 model, I think I could have done much, much better with the 3d. The nose section looks more rocket-plane than CRJ, some details are missing, and the gears aren't modelled correctly. So I decided to rebuild the model using some skills picked up working on other aircraft. Oh, and some cockpit and systems stuff while I'm at it.

I also decided to revisit Nickyivyca's original suggestion in the CRJ900 thread: have one CRJ700 aircraft that has the CRJ700 and CRJ900. So I'm discontinuing the CRJ900 and creating a new aircraft, "CRJ700-family". It will include the following:

  • CRJ700
  • CRJ700ER
  • CRJ700LR
  • CRJ900
  • CRJ900ER
  • CRJ900LR
  • CRJ1000 EuroLite (standard?)
  • CRJ1000ER
Any help is welcome, especially with liveries. The paintkit will be much, much better this time around. ;)

Current progress on the new CRJ700 model. It is being rebuilt from the ground up with much more attention to detail as well as a better 3 view reference. It will have a completely new UV map and it will be used as a basis for the new CRJ900 and CRJ1000 models. The engines will need some more attention and will eventually be split into another model. The flight surfaces also need to be cut out, and the gear doors will need to be cut too.

Excellent deal, Skyop. It is certainly the best method of building aircraft for FG - doing all the very similar aircraft in one family as one. That makes FG look much more complete and satisfies people no matter which version they are most interested in. On top of that, it saves a ton of modeling time since most of these family-type models are quite similar and one can be used as a basis for the others instead of having to start from scratch for each version.

I'm looking forward to updates from you and the completed models.

I think the CRJ-900 was quite well done, with your level of experience and how long it took you to do all the work for it.

Do you think we could work in some added similarities between the CRJ-200 and this series? It would make sense, the cockpits are similar IRL. I know the OHP is slightly different, but I don't know about the avionics. The CRJ-200 has a Collins Proline 4 system, but I didn't find data on the one used in the CRJ-700. I have extensive PDFs on the CRJ-200 cockpit for reference on the avionics in the Proline 4, but they would only be useful on your work if it's the same set.

@ Skyop,

If you can provide a multi-layered file in either Gimp or Inkscape format (whichever is easier for you, I'll convert it, if needed) I might do a few liveries for you...And while you're at it, since you're 3D modelling a similar airframe, it would be great if did the Global Express XRS too ;-)

It would be a great idea to develop the 1000 the last, because it entered commercial service only a few months ago, witch means that there are only two operators: Brit Air and Air Nostrum.

I'd love to have those PDFs, Nick. Could you send them to me? Smart cockpit had to pull all their CRJ documentation. :(

I had a quick look on Wikipedia, and the airframes are too drastically different to be included in CRJ700-family. I don't think it makes sense. :|

It will be the last model created, but the cockpit and systems work will be done simultaneously for all planes (since they will all use the same cockpit model). This project will definitely be wrapped up within a couple months, so I don't think that'll allow enough time for more CRJ1000s to be delivered.

@ Skyop

You're right, it wouldn't make sense to include it with the CRJ-700... But if you remove a section of fuselage in front of the wings of a CRJ-700 it looks pretty much like a Gobal.

Bombardier doesn't have a ton of jigs so it's like I mentioned to Nick when I asked about making a CL-601, the CRJ-200 is essentially a stretched Challenger and the CRJ-700 is basically a stretched Global Express.

Business jets is where they make their money http://www.bombardier.com/en/corporate/media-centre/press-releases/details?docID=0901260d80162feb so it just makes sense to stretch them to make regional jets. ;-)

The airframe warrants a completely new model, Bob (well, except the fuselage, as you said). The wing is a totally different design, and the vertical stabilizer has also changed. It might be possible to reuse the cockpit though.

Whenever you have the time...I'm nowhere near the point where I can do it.

But you've got to admit, it would be a nice addition...To have the ultimate business jet, nothing comes close ;-)

I certainly will, but I'm out of town. If I can find them on my laptop I will, but I think they're only on my desktop.

Latest progress as of today: flight surfaces cut, and the paintkit is under construction! :) Included are ambient occlusion shadows, some little lines here and there, and more details than the original CRJ900.

Bob, before I can send you the paintkit, I will have to add the engine fanblade texture and cut and map the landing gear doors. I shall have that done over the weekend. :)

No worries, I'm trying to figure out how to make Terragear work, my Windoze is annoying me like crazy...

I updated it a few times, so I guess the link broke in the process. Should be fixed now.

The first livery, United Express/Mesa Airlines, is finished:
