Marking topics as "solved"

Postby Gijs » Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:13 pm

Curt and I installed a new addon this evening. It allows topic-startes to flag their problem as being "solved"; so others don't waste time on it.

A first example of the "Solved topic" addon in action can be seen in this topic. As you'll notice, there is a Image icon behind the topic title. If you click the icon, the forum will bring you the the exact post that contains the answer/tip that solved the topic starter's problem.

Therefore, it is important that the topic-starter clicks the Image icon at the right post (the post that gave the answer/tip that solved the problem). Each single post in a topic you started will have such an icon (next to the report/quote icons).

Besides all this, we also have two new search options: view unsolved topics and view your unsolved topics. You'll find these links at the top of the Board Index.

Feedback and questions are welcome!

Cheers,
Gijs (moderator)

And I am assuming it is just out of play for non-solvable topics such as aircrafts?

Right, not every topic contains a problem (luckily not!). But the majority does. ;)
Anyway, it's a test for now. We'll see how it goes.

I think, it's a good idea! :)
I guess now we'll have to remind the people to use that feature! :D

First: That is something I was missing since a long time - great to have it now

Second: Maybe I just need new glasses - but I tried to find how to operate these new functions: neither the "solved", nor the list "unsolved" nor the "your unsolved".

Are these functions already implement? And if how?
Who is supposed (or able) to set the flag??

Anyhow it sounds great! thanks for the effort

I'm glad you all are positive so far!

- You might need to empty your browsers catch, in order to see the new icons.
- You can only flag topics that you started yourself. In a topic you started, each single post will have an extra icon Image next to it. Clicking this icon will mark the topic as solved and the respective post as the "solution". You can try it on a topic of yours. To "unmark the topic as solved", you simply click the icon next to any post in that topic.

Gijs, would it be possible for moderators to mark topics as solved, if the original poster goes away for some reason?

Yes; but I don't feel like I enjoy going through all topics since the start of this forum...
But on further posts, feel free to contact the mods when you think it should be set as solved.

Well, of course, I wasn't suggesting you go through all topics from 5 years ago! :) But your current solution (contacting a mod) sounds like the perfect idea.

Could this be done by the "report-this-thread/post"-button? Or anything else, one should consider? Just PM'ing the mods...? :?:

Thanks for the idea Chris, you can use the report topic/post form now to alert us of "solved" topics.

OK, Gijs, I'm up to 3 now, need a call on this...

If I post a topic of the form 'Why doesn't X work', and I finally end up with an answer of the form 'X doesn't work because of Bug N'. I have my answer, despite the now discovered bug. Since I have an answer, should I mark my post solved? I hadn't wanted to close things, for the sake of discussing the fix, which I suppose the thread should now be moved elsewhere?

Yes, you can mark the post as "solved"; the topic will remain open for replies. The bug should be dealt with at our bugtracker (where it will be set to unsolved of course, until the bug is fixed).

Could there perhaps be an "unsolved" icon? As my post "Goood joystick bindings (that happen to be for the Cyborg-X)" isn't really "unsolved" despite being in Support/Hardware. Though it is a work in progress..... :)

Everything that is not "solved" is "unsolved"...
