Yak-40 [Beta Version Available]

Postby Armchair Ace » Tue Aug 17, 2010 6:01 am

Has anyone here heard about someone developing a Yak-40 for Flightgear? I have seen Yak-40s appearing on the MPMaps twice now.

There's apparently a Yak-40 being developed in the Russian FlightGear forum - and the first post in this (Google Translated) thread links to a Yak-40 for FlightGear being hosted on Google Code.

I'll check it out and see if it's any good. Here's the main page if anyone is interested.

Update: Just flew with the non-SVN version for a bit and holy crap it sucks; you practically need to put thrust to 80% to taxi, it makes the Tu-154B's sounds and you can't even steer it without using the rudder while in the air  trying out the SVN version...

Update 2: Not gonna bother with the SVN version either, it's basically the same plane except that you can steer it in the air with the ailerons rather than the rudder. But other than that, it's the same thing.

I think you're being a bit harsh - it's only a beta version! Thanks for telling me where to get the Yak-40, by the way! :D

The cockpit looks great - complete with contemporary Soviet/Russian instruments. There is a cabin, but it doesn't look too good.

Here are some pictures.

Beta? Well that explains everything

If there's a good thing about it, it's that it can deliver enough thrust to actually get in the air  (unlike some other early beta planes I've found)

Looks nice visually. The fdm scares me though.

Hate to be warming posts, but the SVN version on my FG 2.0 sucks totally. There are no animations, the elevator looks posed in a climb, and instruments are outside of the cockpit. There is also no livery texture on the plane.
Life's only understandable backwards, but you have to live it forwards. (found in a youtube video)

Maybe it's just work in progress... earlier this month my DATCOM+ based JSBSim Carreidas 160 model was pretty much unflyable, now it's quite nice... :D
Before anyone asks, yes the FDM does take wing sweep into account.

Of course, this is WIP only. Dynamic is very poor. Just I make visual model now.

That is some awesome work there - I wish more people would spend time developing cockpits - yes, most people see the airframe, but all a pilot sees is the cockpit.

Hi specter!

Could you give me a hint where to find the beta version (or your instruments)?
I have modelled a few russian instruments too and try to make a "building set", llke FG's "Instruments (-3d)"-folder.
I already have a (short) table with:
- soviet name, version
- description
- photo
- 3d-model/.xml available?
- used in which aircraft?

Would be nice to add a few more instruments to that list! :D

Ciao,

Adrian
