Announcement: VTBD Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Int'l, Thailand

Postby D-SKY1 » Mon Nov 15, 2010 1:32 am

Hi all,

another architectural gem is on it's way to be part of FlightGear's world:
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport (VTBD), Thailand, is now announced to be work in progress.

After creating Manila International (RPLL), Philippines for TerraSync users I see that Asia is not yet very much populated although we can find many very interesting airports there. Yet, as another quite popular place I started on building the new Bangkok Airport. After finishing it I will create AI traffic of Thai Airways traveling to the most popular airports. If necessary I will provide desired liveries.

First insight and more to come:

More on the progress later.

PS: Soon comprehensive AI traffic will be available for Manila Airport for our users of GIT's fgdata.

That's one of the most interesting airports in the world, as a matter of architecture. Even the airport on its own is worth a visit :P
It would be very cool to have it in FlightGear!

Cheers,
Gijs

Hi Gijs and all others,

Gijs wrote:That's one of the most interesting airports in the world, as a matter of architecture. Even the airport on its own is worth a visit :P

I agree. This is one of my most important reasons for me choosing this airport. It's a great challenge to build this airport in Blender. Luckily I was able to visit this airport in 2008 already. So I have a good impression of it's dimensions and character.

Today I inform all of you about the actual status of my work in progress:
  • After fighting some days with big workload in Real Life I started fighting with approaching smart UV unwrapping to place good photo realistic textures and to respect textranslatation for night textures. I finally came up with a satisfying solution
  • During daytime the glass elements main color will be blue but at night they will glow yellow-isch (by implementing an according XML)
  • Main entrance building is built up and textured. Of course textranslate is respected here, too
  • Still missing are tower, parking houses, roads and some minor maintenance buildings

Slightly frustrated I had to redo most of my first work :|

After reviewing architectural details I decided that my first approach does not fulfil my quality standards. Though I did not restart from the scratch it still give me more than enough work to delay the process significantly.

So here's my second try in hope to get good modelwork for a sufficient FGFS experience.

That looks very promising, keep it up! Just one hint: When I was there this year, the tarmac on the road was rather dark grey than blue. Maybe you want to change that texture.

D-79,
thanks for your hint :)
There is no real texturing right now so the colours are not intended to be used later on. Besides modelling I'm fighting Gimp to produce own textures in good quality. It's hard to find high quality GPL textures for my needs.

More on this later...

Mike

Nice work, so far!
I don't think the heavy delay will matter, as long as the final model comes out better?
Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

Despite having over 1700 posts here, I am not even close to being the most skilled guy here... I'm just words and bad drawing, not experience. :P

Dear Forum,

airport Bangkok is work in progress but must rest now for a few weeks. I disappear for a few weeks to a more sunny and warm place and return mid of January.
Season's greetings, peaceful Christmas and a happy new year to all of you. Thanks for all comments and a great year here.

See ya again in 2011 :)

After being busy with real life (TM) I finally found some time to work more on Bangkok Airport details. Here you see some improvement of the hotel directly in front of VTBD.

PS: No, I was not in Bangkok.. this time ;)

Three things,

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi has been made previously, can be downloaded at www.theomegahangar.co.cc

Same for Manilla...

Last thing, VTBD is the ICAO for Bangkok's other airport, Don Mueang Airport.

Connect is correct. (HAHA that rhymes.) But if this version will cause less lag on machines, ON WITH DEVELOPMENT!!

The correct ICAO code is VTBS.

Hi to all who reply to my announcement.

(1)
thanks for pointing my attention to me mixing up VTBD/VTBS. Will be addressed in further posts and in my models before release.

(2)
My work on RPLL and VTBS are meant to go directly to TerraSync or are already inside and go later to our official scenery database 2.0. This is my one and only reliable source. Any other work at other websites is not existent for me. Please respect the fact that it's impossible to scan the whole WWW for any other work done before or after. Prior to starting I announced my plans to Martin, the admin of our scenery database. I didn't hear any concerns from him.

(3)
My work is based completely on GPL. All measurements, positioning and textures are completely GPL'ed. This is basic requirement for all stuff that goes to the official packages.

(4)
I don't like that my thread gets threadnapped. It's rude to switch the original poster's topic. WSSS is no topic in my thread. Please open another thread for this.

Have a nice day.
Cheers,
Mike
