Nice!

Torsten I recommend you multithread even if it only adds a couple frames.

Thorsten, nice (I got your email as well)! Would love to "play" with it :D

Not yet, but I'll definitely give it a try. I'd like to have the viewport setup ready before I dive into the fine-tuning. It's not that much time left and surprisingly everything takes longer than expected...

lol, fantastic images ... that should now be a great motivator to introduce better parallelism into FlightGear, isn't it?
I don't even want to start imagining how much resources are left unused on such a monster machine when running FlightGear...

Seriously though, the company that provided this beast of a machine should really be be added to the FlightGear hall of fame, the "Thanks" file wouldn't be doing justice.
Maybe we should add a "hall of fame" wiki page, with only the admins having write privileges?

By the way, I am pretty sure that this image could be quite a success on digg.com ;-)

The machine specs are, well, insane:

dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5690 @ 3.47GHz, total of 24 cores
12GB RAM
four nvidia GTX460 with 2GB RAM each.
enough harddrive space, sound, DVD, etc., etc.

Seeing the specs of this machine, it probably must feel like someone giving you access to an A380 and asking you to fly it ... when all you got is a PPL - doesn't it ? ;-)
I know I felt like that on my 8 core machine with 32 gb RAM and one single NVIDIA SLI configuration.

It will be a very interesting project to make FlightGear scale for this type of setup.
With so many idle cores, there are a lot of interesting things that could be done.

Yesterday, I picked up the six displays at Martin's and just hooked them to the machine...
Image

6x1920x1200 for the outside view
2x1280x1024 for the panel
summing up to 16445440 pixels with a constant frame-rate of 60 fps - roughly 1GP (gigapixel) per second ;-)

I have configured 4 TwinView X-Screens (both heads of a GPU combined into a single X-screen). Six OSG-cameras render the scene from FlightGear. A separate OpenGL-application runs the 2D-Panel in the center of the assembly.

That is an awesome setup! Sorry if this was already mentioned, but do you know which aircraft you'll be demoing at the event? **cough** Demo the F/A-18! **cough**

Awesome setup Torsten!

I see you've got an Elite console hooked up - did someone reverse engineer the interfaces so it could be used with FlightGear?

tnx.

Personally, I love the reel-to-reel and valve amplifier on the left there :)

Yeah - from a land before time... It's still fun to listen to good music and see something move!

I tried to, without success. I asked Elite for a protocol spec, without success. So I replaced the controller with an ATMega8 and make it appear as a 9 axis, 32 Button HID-Joystick.

I don't feel comfortable in these fighters for various reasons and will mostly use the Seneca. The Panel in the center of the image has a controllable panel for the instruments with rotary encoders which works best with the Seneca. But Jorg will be there with his 3 Monitor setup and has impressive flying skills on fighters.

Are the plans for the ATMega8 based interface available?

Status update,

I have the basic setup for FSWeekend running now.
Just because the machine had one more PCI-e slot available and I had an unsused GeForce 9500 floating around, our FSWeekend presentation workstation (did I mention our sponsor Thomas-Krenn.AG? http://www.thomas-krenn.com/) now has five dual-head GPUs driving 10 displays, six with 1920x1200px and four with 1280x1024px.

Enjoy a video of the maiden flight at LOWI

Sorry for the poor quality, I recorded it with the video-mode of my digital camera.

Hi Torsten,

I'm quite curious about your setup, like what X/twinview and OSG camera configuration you are using.

Possible to show us your xorg.conf and flightgear configurations?

Thanks.

Pigeon.
