Submit your screenshot for the SOTM of September 2022

Postby Anarcho-pilot » Sun Aug 28, 2022 10:26 pm

Hello everyone!

Now's your chance to submit your candidate for September's FlightGear SOTM contest!

Participation Rules
1. 20 entries (because a poll can only have 20 options).
2. Only one entry per person to give everyone a fair chance of submitting a screenshot.
3. You may enter one extra for somebody else. This person of course can submit their own candidate.
4. If you submit a screenshot of another person, please make sure he/she grants you the right to publish it under the correct license.
5. Please convert your picture from PNG into JPEG (plenty of converters online).
6. Must be taken with FlightGear.
7. Every picture should have a caption. It would be useful to add the name of the aircraft and the location, where the screenshot was taken, to the caption. (For example: "Greeting the dawn - C172P, Keflavik".) Otherwise, please, mention it at least in your entry.
8. Screenshots must not be post-processed except from cropping and/or resizing (but you may use the in-sim filters). You may also add titles mentioning an author of the screenshot and/or aircraft/location displayed on it.
9. You may change your entry as often as you want, until the voting starts.
10. You agree to license your screenshot under the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license for publication by the FlightGear project.
11. You agree that the screenshot may be used to promote the FlightGear project, including publication on the flightsim.com forum with proper attribution according to the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license.

Here is a Wiki article with some advice on making nice screenshots: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Make_nice_screenshots .

Voting will start when 20 entries are reached or at the latest on September 21st, in a separate topic.

Best wishes - Anarcho-pilot.

Were you using photoscenery @merspieler ? If so, it would be interesting to know what they did to the water, that it has such a sharp color change !

it isn't necessarily the size of the image that matters... it is more how fast it can be downloaded and rendered on slow links and systems... yes, sometimes a larger file can be downloaded faster than a smaller one... this due to server gz, in many cases, which compresses files on the fly...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

yes, but on a slow link, file size matters, and if the server is slow with gz, then reducing size is good again as that reduces the time it takes to gzip it.
also, in this case I'm in control of the server side, so feel free to test speeds and let me know if you see any difference which don't come from size

Evening Crossing Bosporus with Velocity

Sightseeing tour from Greece to Istanbul via Bosporus
This was the last trip of the "South Europe Coast Tour" of St. Paul Airlines, which led me from Malaga all the way to Istanbul. Plenty of nice scenery on the way!

It is not me, who has made up this rule. And, honestly, I am not good at all this questions relating the work of computer networks. But if the administration of the forum encouraging members to do so (and wkitty42 explaining why), maybe it has sense to do so...

Anyway, thank you for respecting my request and following the rules of the contest! :)

Well... I've explained why I think what they say isn't true...
If they prove me wrong that's great but so far I've seen file size matter way more than format on slow (and even fast) connections and systems... and I've messed with up to 16k files... so please prove me wrong.

merspieler :
You are right.
What is slow system ? System, where You can run FG is fast enough to display any image in split second. Download time is most important. Small file - short time and vice versa.

I think from now on, I'll make a low res jpg preview and clicking it leads you to the full-res png
