Nice one... :)

But again, you need to convert it to jpg.

Any .pngs will not be entered in the poll! Check your screenshots, make sure they are .jpgs!

I don't get it -- what the problem with PNG?

generally they are too large and slow to load...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Try looking at them from a weak internet connection, and you'll realize immediately. If you have a gallery with 10 pngs, you can make yourself a cup of coffee before they're all loaded.

Note: PNG converted to JPG...

G

Side note: on the speed over the net argument for JPG vs. PNG, why are the image files that are used in most aircraft all PNG or RGB? I agree, JPG is more efficient. Curious as to why it's not a default. Is this merely historical latency, or are there other more technical reasons? Seeing this is probably a thread buster, anyone who know the answer shoot me a PM.

N-SCOT, I don't mind, maybe it can be split if the thread goes further off topic, but it is relevant to this thread IMO...

.jpgs do not support transparency and lose a lot of quality each time they are encoded --> see https://www.turnkeylinux.org/blog/png-vs-jpg.

But it should be possible to use .jpgs in FlightGear, if you do not need transparency. Perhaps some 3D / 2D experts could help us as to whether this is even possible?

I'll maybe try converting some IDG-A32X textures to .jpgs (keeping the "master" as .png), and see what I notice.

If we were able to only use .jpgs as 3D textures we would lose having alpha channel transparencies for propeller blurs, also certain fine details are better rendered as alpha masks and ground material shader effect masks. The mask encoding is just one of a few reasons why .png's are a bit heavy on video processing. The other is that .jpg's are often less refined and tend to de-rasterize converted images, compressing the data and in the process blurring and generally muting details.

Because what matters more for textures is how fast the OSG loader can get them from your harddisk to the graphics card, not how fast they can be transmitted over the web. And typically compressed formats take longer to load because they need to be uncompressed.

So JPG keeps your harddisk space occupation small but jams the model loading thread - which probably hurts you a lot more.

In fact, even PNG is a compromise between speed and storage needs, RGB loads quite a bit faster. Compressed and pre-mipmapped dds is fastest but doesn't work with OpenSource graphics drivers.
