Well, since Ares I-X has had it's first test launch and we know it won't blow up (every flight, anyway :)), how about somebody model this rocket/capsule? I am pretty sure DATCOM+ would be easy to use on such a round object (I might even be able to do it) and last I checked JSBSim supports rocket engines (Don't know how well they work, though). The cockpit seems as if it will be the hardest part as it will probably be digital (and they aren't any good pics of the mockup, yet).

The flight controls can be wired to thrust vectoring (which I also believe JSBSim is capable of), Nasal could drop the lower stage(s) and probably drop the weights and thrust from the stage(s).

Hi.

Well, you may or may not have noticed that I just added a space shuttle solid rocket motor (SRB) model to the JSBSim CVS repository. It's tested. It works fairly well. it should work for an Ares 1X model. I have always intended to model the flight of launch vehicles. Take a look at the JSBSim Reference Manual and look at the case studies in the back. There's a discussion there for modeling rocket flight.

This is going to be a work-in-progress. Right now, JSBSim cannot do proper multi-body (multi-stage) staging. I have an idea how it should work, but that's going to take some time to implement. There are alternatives, though.

I can probably provide a model of Ares 1X with a couple of caveats,

1) It must be based on publicly available data. Since I do modeling and simulation for this vehicle in my "day job", I have to be very careful to protect sensitive data.
2) Some parameters will be estimated.
3) GNC systems will bear no resemblance to the real vehicle GNC systems, but will act to make the vehicle "fly right". ;-)

A little off topic, but we have a very nice Shuttle model (by NASA), that we can use: viewtopic.php?p=32000#p32000
I'll take a look at the SRB model once I got the time ;)

Lol the stripy thing is an ARES 1...

Now this would make an interesting payload

Jon,

I am modelling a V-2 (I typically start here as there is a lot of data for it). As I work through this, are there are any caveats I may not know of or should watch out for with a simple single stage vehicle like this?
