certainly want something with a chrome or mirror effect to it...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Just captured my first satellite from orbit onto the RMS arm...

(This basically is a bitch to code - but fun to fly - especially once Eileen helps...)

And slowly the whole retrieval workflow is hammered out - I was now able to capture the Spartan-201 and properly stow and latch it in the payload bay, and I'm halfway through generalizing the scheme to any payloads.

Since the management class also generates the necessary sensor echos, we can look forward to a full rendezvous and retrieval mission profile soon

Vostok was helpful, thanks.

Now that I am getting somewhere with "shiny" I need to figure out exactly which parts need to have it applied. It also required some mesh "smoothing" for it to look right. I think to get a real lifelike effect it may require some new textures, A "foil" texture for one.

Well, the foil needs a normal map I suppose...

You're amazing guys, and you have no limit. Thanks! Looking forward to try all this!

@Gingin, thanks for the links, the blog about STS-93 is very instructive, and scary. I guess, this story is the reason why the AC Bus Sensors have to be switched off during ascent and manually switched on after MECO?!

cheers,
eatdirt.

Very nice :)
Can we have pictures of Eileen AutoPilot ?

Hubble looks really great

@EatDirt:, AC bus sensor are switched to monitor for ascent to avoid automatic shedding on an AC circuit ( loss of two leads to a loss of an engine). Alarm and visual cues are still present in monitor mode ( in off mode, nothing)
It was before that event, in case of something like this would happen
Back to On on Orbit then indeed

Sort of...

So there's now three different orbiting objects (ISS, the Spartan-201 and the TDRS demo) and I'm at the stage where you can select one of them to reference and Eileen does stationkeeping with regard to that reference.

The scheme still has blind spots - you need to have an object referenced to get sensor data from it, so you can't have Eileen track one object while pointing the radar at a different one.

But at least this sort of supports an assembly scenario...

Looks like the ISS is also in need of some better texturing and effects. I guess I need to spend some time in orbit with my paint can! :)

I wonder how well a spray can would work considering (almost) zero external pressure. Thats an interesting idea, it would probably be rather difficult to spread paint in orbit especially if it starts to float as a cloud

Is there a better on on NASA's site we could have adapted but didn't?

Several - the issue is size, the most detailed one amounts to 90 MB when I convert it to ac3d, the 11.3 MB version is in fact on the Shuttle repository, just not referenced - I never managed to texture it...

Well, and it needs to be shifted in origin to a suitable docking port...
