Vostok-1 capsule glow and char

Postby Thorsten » Wed Jun 14, 2017 1:52 pm

A small demonstration what kind of effects we can do these days - some of you might have noticed that I've been quite busy developing Vostok-1 further over the last days, and part of what I've been focusing on are the entry visuals.

Here we go, the capsule and TDU in space, all shiny metal:

Image

TDU separated and entering the atmosphere, glow just starting at the stagnation point:

Now the capsule heat shield starts to glow in earnest:

The plasma tail hides what I want to show, so here's around Mach 6 after the plasma has disappeared, still glowing...

Image

... and a close-up reveals that the metal is no longer shiny but charred by the fierce heat:

... and braking parachute out, ready to deploy main chute:

Celestial ballet - the Vostok capsule has been separated from the TDU in preparation for entry and is slowly drifting away.

Image

(Vostok users can soon enjoy the same treats Shuttle users can in watching discarded stages fall or drift away, I'm currently porting the code needed to do that.)

Rigging the third stage also to be simulated independently

Image

I had to maneuver quite a bit to bring the dropped stage into view, the windows are tiny...

I guess I'm almost done with what I wanted to improve. Vostok now has a launch AP which can carry you into orbit (intentionally not very precise), you can optionally see all discarded stages disappear, many of the quirks of the simulation are fixed and the effects/shaders are re-worked.

Some more visuals:

Dawn launch across the continental US

That's from a different launch - second stage drop, third stage ignited and blasting away

Image

After a short TDU burst, the spent third stage is drifting off slowly.

I vaguely remember someone asked for this long ago - you can now see the four boosters separating as well (okay, that's not pushed yet because the menu is still confusing) - it's just not very spectacular because it happens damn fast - at the point of booster separation, Vostok has about twice the acceleration the Shuttle has at SRB separation, so the booster stages fall back in an eyeblink.
