It would be nice if we can launch it from a launchpad :)

I just found out when looking at artwork elsewhere that NASA also has a few free 3D models of the Space Shuttle made available themselves. Two of them may even be better than my model (and for certain at least one is). But I don't know all the details about usage permissions. (Mine is under GPL v2, so I know at least that should be compatable for future use.)

So if you're curious, the models can be found here:

Hmm- it seems that it can be used even for commercial purposes.

@Paulis: it would be great if we had the Shuttle for the next release! How far you are?

Converted the model and half of the textures, but I have to say their textures are somewhat terrible. Very low resolutions... It's a shame, the model is perfect with lots of detail and then such ugly textures :(
You c(/w)ould expect more from a High Resolution model....

This texture for example covers the whole side of the shuttle. Tough, the texture is only 640*92 pixels! Below the texture (on full size)...

Perhaps we can retexture it?

:)

There's even a better solution: use the less res. version (which has a higher resolution actually , weird people at NASA ).
Here's a first screenshot:

Sure, wonderful :)
Without any doubt it will want the very last JSBSim FDM with the rocket feature.
Jon has worked on it recently.

I guess it won't be very difficult to add the rocket launchers, and to simulate the complete scenario launch and landing.

Cheers

Are the boosters planned on being included?

He worked on the FDM? I saw there were made some changes 3 months ago...

External fuel tank is added, only the two launchers need a convert.

BTW: This model does not include a cockpit.

It doesn't have to have one right away. I can imagine the space shuttle cockpit being a nightmare to model.

Thats a nice looking model. Maybe we could have the space shuttle as detailed as the Concorde cockpit :)
The cockpit glass displays are gonna be fun to make: http://www51.honeywell.com/aero/common/ ... _Large.jpg

Look here, next here and here

There's realistic (expect FDM) Space Shutle there, with GPL-license.

Yes, what about an addition of:
=> FlightGear from the ground to the Stratosphere
=> Orbiter in the space around the planet
and Celestia to travel far away in the space,
and following
with Orbiter again when getting to an other planet, and FG again on that planet :) :)

let's dream
