Whew. Marvelous work. Quite an improvement from April last year.

I've finally found the time to tackle an issue that has been on the ToDo list for a while - render the glow of the heat shield during entry properly.

This has been a bit more tricky than I anticipated, but I am fairly happy with the final solution.

* max. temperature at the nose/leading wing edge is computed by the heating simulation

* using a temperature map based on the IR image the Kuiper Airborne Observatorium has taken of Columbia's heat shield during an entry, the max. temperature is mapped into a temperature field across the orbiter surface (I know this isn't 100% correct since the flow pattern and hence the location of hotspots has likely Mach dependence, so the image doesn't tell the whole story, but... we all have to finish somewhere, right?)

* and using some GLSL magic, the temperature value is converted into an (rgb) and mix factor corresponding to blackbody radiation at that temperature

Some bare tests of the heat map just inserting peak temperature by hand (temperatures are 750 K, 1000 K and 2000 K):

And in-situ testing during a simulated entry:

(The code can also do quite goofy things, like have the whole Shuttle glow in bright blue at 12.000 K temperature...)

Nice :)
Is the rudder and engines protected from heat then?

No, I just didn't apply the effect by the time I took the screenies - it's fixed now.

That looks HOT! Brings it home as to how dangerous re-entry really is.

can this glow shader be used in other situations(like that clow from jet engines for instance)?
anyway, that's a beautiful work! and it seems to be useful also in other aircraft

Yes, it's a very general bit of technology, coming as part of the space.eff suite, which in turn is an extension of model-combined.eff with things primarily important for spaceflight like harsh high-altitude light. All you need to do is to assign a temperature to the surface (same as with the IR effect) and if that temperature is above ~700 K you'll see glow.

In sync with the version coming with the latest FG release, the Shuttle flight manual is now updated - get the latest version from my webpage

Hello Guys,

I am kind of new on the forum. I met Thorsten on Orbiter Forum talking about Space Shuttle.
So I am discovering Flight Gear and that incredible Space Shuttle Simulation, terrific work and evolution.
Amazing work Team Shuttle :)

Fisrt things first, I am a bit stucked.
Black MFD and one MFD with unreadable things ( even with Cessna and radio/nav frequency panel). I read somewhere on this topic that it could have been something to see with Canvas, but I am quite lost ?

Thank you for your help.

PS: Deluxe Manual is really nice !! Looks like a NASA Workbook :D

Weird... What's your FlightGear version, and what's your graphics card and driver?

P.S. I'm also a proud DG pilot...who didn't get to reentry before switching to Minetest ;)

Hi and welcome here :-)

First, can you confirm you're running FG 2017.2.1 as downloaded from here as well as the Shuttle version obtained via the built-in download?

Then, could you go to FGHome (see instructions here to find it on your OS) and inspect the log file in there - which may show some kind of error (search e.g. for 'Nasal runtime error' - that's the one I'm hoping for here) and if you find something post it here?

Third, could you post a screenshot of 'unreadable things' (is it lots of text on top of each other)?

And last, could you give us a few basic parameters of your system (OS, memory, type of graphics card,...)?

I installed last version of Fg, the one dated from end of may.
Gtx 580, driver I am not sure, not on my main computer.
Could it come from a too old version of driver?

Even in orbiter, I was more into the shuttle thanDG lately ahah

I don't know, that's what I need the screenshot and the log file for.

Posting a screenshot showing the help/about dialog, as well as the fgfs.log file would seem like a good idea
