Sunday at Bastia

Postby N385MB » Tue May 25, 2021 8:23 pm

Hi,

Would anybody like to do ATC at LFKB Bastia on 6/6/21 from 1700-2000? I will not be there for my usual session.
My passengers receive hazard pay... but at least I have fun.

Cheers,
Margot

I'll see if I can arrange it; at least some time I should be there; only I don't know if I will be able to stay all the time !

Not a problem at all. You are always welcome to come and help with controlling. Thanks for flying today!

Quick question - Wondering if I could ATC at Bastia Poretta (maybe next Sunday). Any details or things I should know would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi SZ912,
Of course, you may connect as an ATC at Bastia Poretta next Sunday. Anyone can ATC at any (towered) airport so long as they are willing to coordinate with anyone already controlling there. However, there are a few things that you should first consider and practice. Here are just a few:
1. The airport is in France. You don't have to be French to control in France (I myself am not), but you should at least know a little French before you control there alone since many of the pilots flying around there prefer to speak French. If you can't do this, it's no problem. I can handle those wanting French service and you can handle the others.
2. Read the charts. Here are the IFR charts: https://www.sia.aviation-civile.gouv.fr ... -fr-FR.pdf

And VFR: https://www.sia.aviation-civile.gouv.fr ... 2.LFKB.pdf
VFR flights report their position at these points.

3. Listen to the live ATC in France. Here's an airport similar to Bastia whose ATC communications are recorded: https://www.liveatc.net/search//?icao=lflp

Don't be intimated. It's quite fun. See you this Sunday.
My passengers receive hazard pay... but at least I have fun.

Cheers,
Margot

I went through everything you sent, and I think I understand most of it. The only thing I am still confused about is, how do you join FlightGear as an ATC? I assume you would use the "Air Traffic Controller" aircraft in the default Hangar, but is there anything else I need to set up?

Any info would be appreciated

you use one of the available ATC programs... ATC-PIE is the first one that comes to mind... there is another but it hasn't been updated in a while and uses the old MP protocol...

generally speaking, you run the ATC tool in one task and FG in another task at the same time... the ATC tool for the ATC work and FG for the ATC's view from the tower...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

The other one's called OpenRadar, and I recommend it for starters because of it's simplicity compared to ATC-pie !
