ATC at KSEA?

Postby Turnit » Thu Oct 01, 2015 2:53 am

Would anyone like it if I do ATC at KSEA? I'm looking to learn another skill in FG, so if anyone's interested please reply.

And will that be in the next decade?
Seriously,
1. SEA area does not attract me -- nothing interesting.
2. I've seen so many people, even me, start vas, atc service, and so many stop on the first month, after getting bored.
3. I dont have a mic either.

Plus, fps are terible at SEA for me.
Not that I voted no, or yes, but I probably would not come.
By the way, what level of ATC do you provide?
Is it "callsign, takeoff" or "Callsign, cleared to EGKK via GORLO3V, expect 36L, squawk 4007, FL240, departure on 121.1"
If latter, for sure, I will maybe fly in one day, if I can brave fps.

It would be the second example, I would prefer realism.

Also there would be no point in you comming if you get bad FPS. I would do ATC at Seattle because its the closest international airport to me and there is not a lot of pillots there in FG.

I hate to say it, but if you ask it probably won't happen. I think the only way to make it work is to do what Jomo did and set a regular day / time per week and stick to it. Then announce here that you're doing it, post images and stuff and promote it. Then maybe it'll be something that lasts.

I tried with KLAX / KLAS for a while. Every now and then players showed up, but most of the time nobody did. And so after a while life takes over and you just sort of end up not doing it one week and then if someone was there one week when you were there, and then shows up when you're not, they'll think it wasn't regular, so they won't come back. And in the beginning that somebody not showing up again is like 50% of your traffic.

As for level of control I think squawks seem completely useless, unless the ATC is running software that requires it. With the version of Open Radar I used I didn't need squawks. It was just time consuming. The by far best ATCs I flew under were super-flexible. A newbie got really basic instructions, and a more advanced player got pretty reasonable instructions - without too much fuzz and re-routing.

I'd probably visit you btw.

I may start ATC at the beggining of November or late this month, but its not for certain yet. I would only be departure, and wont have ground or approach.

You won't get enough traffic to restrict yourself to departures only. When someone sees the OpenRadar icon on the map, they'll expect to be able to fly in and fly out. You need to be delivery, ramp, ground, tower and approach right from the start.

To be very honest, not much traffic will come through, if you want ATC experience just log on every now and then and be KSFO. I know you probably want to be realistic and follow the real thing like being departure, but really not even jomo has ground, arrival, departure etc.

I would recommend you if you really wanted to get experience either :

-set a time and date so people are aware in advance
-go to a busy airport ( EDDF with jomo ) and ask politely if you can observe ( not interrupt ) his session , to see how it works ( tune in on mumble too )
-get that mic sorted, you will find more pilots are likely to listen if you actually talk to them with you voice, not with your keyboard
-read charts and understand how "departures" as you wanted work at your local airport

Im not trying to scare you away from ATCing, I'm actually encouraging you, however you can't really just rock up and expect to be a legit tower, it will take time and patience. The more you ATC the better.

From experience i just want to let you know to prepare in advance so it stays fun and enjoyable.

Cheers

Hello,
At this point I can't resist proposing the ATC-pie solo training mode, since you say your goal is to acquire new skills. You would have control over the task and will be able to select DEP only if that is what you are looking for.
Other things are configurable: amount of traffic, entry/exit points, etc. You won't be training for radio of course, but it did not look like your top concern.

Have fun and feel free to report.

KSFO theres no point with the amount of newbie pilots. Im not going to do it with the amount of pilots at Seattle.
