Tutorial videos

Postby mickybadia » Wed Jul 15, 2015 6:03 pm

Hello,

This is to announce the beginning of a series of tutorial videos for ATC-pie, which I hope will come as a compensation for the lack of written documentation. Now that the program has gone beyond fully trivial and guessable, and given how motivation drops as soon as one thinks of writing a user manual, I reckoned video could do a fair job at getting people understand a lot more than the wiki page alone...

The first (and only for now) video is already uploaded! Watch it on Youtube [EDIT: replaced link to lone video by one to full playlist]; you may comment here or there.

Note that I have no idea of the pace I will take to create and publish new material.
Take care!

Great! Now that it's vacation time, I am preparing to do some videos as well, actually the first one planned is about how to install on windows. Just need to set up the virtual machine.

Ha! Sometimes things just work out: I have litterally just binned (trashed) the email I was writing to you CaptB to (1) say that I had made this video, as you were planning on talking about transponders as well, but I see you have seen it; (2) inform that Windows installation was now a strong demand, and ask that you perhaps do one as you are running Windows yourself, but I see you have accepted the challenge in parallel! :-)

From now on, and just so you know my plan, I intend to rather talk about the program, explain its features and how to use them, mostly illustrating with dummy examples. I will focus much less on real-time session comments, advice to pilots/ATCs and airspace regulations or phraseology, as I believe it will be much interesting for you to keep that part. You're the mentor, I'm just the developer. :-p

So thanks for the installation vid, then you are free to forget about the software and focus on the concepts. Though of course I am open to any other type of coordination if you have any different idea in mind.

Hi all,

The second video about strips, racks and radar identification is online. I have created a playlist to compile and order the tutorial. So the link to bookmark, already announced on the wiki, is this one.

Enjoy watching.

And another one, appended to the playlist, on mode S and strip conflicts.

Phew!
The fourth video is up, about flight plans and how they are worked in ATC-pie.
The next one will be about vectoring...

Hello,
I have uploaded one more video to the tutorial playlist, about strip handovers. You should subscribe to this topic if you want to be notified of further videos, as the next one may take a little more time to come.

I plan the following episodes:
- radio and ATIS recording
- text chat and aliases
- radar background customisation (images, drawings, colours)
- routing and conflict warnings
- solo game mode

How about it?

Good video series. Though I am not that interested in ATC-ing myself, it is always interesting to see how it is done. It also helps demystify the ATC and the tools.

Hmm, "Alice" and "Bob" somehow makes me think of encrypted communications. ;)

Haha, I did not think this would be detected on first view. GG! There is a cryptic connection with Charlie as well :-p
