Isn't scenery 2.0 meant to come with FG 3.0?

Postby xdega » Sun Feb 16, 2014 2:12 am

I have been using RC3.0 w/ terrasync enabled of course, but yet to see any of this "new scenery" that was talked about in the pre-release post for FG 3.0. Is this an error? or is Scenery 2.0 not live yet on terrasync?

If you're seeing highway interchanges and curvy rivers, that's scenery 2. Also, flooded low-lying airports, e.g., KHAF.

one user reported having to go to higher shader settings to see highways...

anyways, Scenery 2.0 is for sure distributed via terrasync (with any release, actually, but terrasync is dead simple to use with 3.0 now - thanks to James! :))

I guess I am not seeing the water effects in the KSFO area. It just looks like a green/brown'ish color. Not really noticing any difference really.

At KSFO, the taxiways are square with the old scenery; with the new scenery, they're rounded. If you can see highways, you're using the new scenery (Philosopher, I'm using the lowest shader settings and I see everything; I believe it's part of the mesh, not a shader effect.)

If you just downloaded the 3.0RC, it might not have come with the new scenery and you'll have to get it via terrasync.

* The current scenery distribution policy is:

- new scenery 2.0 via terrasync
- old scenery 1.0 via web download

so that users have a choice - new scenery might be problematic on weaker graphics cards and/or 32bit systems due to memory limits

* Water effects are a shader effect independent of what scenery you use. They are implemented only on high quality settings as I know, and they rely on a 8192x4096 texture sheet mapping the depth globally. If a graphics card can't handle such large texture sheets, it won't work.

* highways are structures in the terrain mesh, and insofar as I understand our rendering strategies, it's impossible that they'd only appear at high quality settings. We don't change landclasses in the shader.

All what Thorsten said is correct. Have a flight at LOWI if you want to discover the Corine part + 850 airports of the new scenery.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, as a former FSX and X-Plane 10 user, all I can say is that FG3 amazes me each time I start it!

I admire the plausible autogen, IMO much better choice than that used in whatever algorithm X-plane 10 is using. Also the mesh, the textures, the highways and rivers... pretty much everything about it :-)

Weather modeling is another aspect that trully makes FG3 unique! All users should explore it's possibilities, and as a glider pilot I welcome the ridge and thermal effects, way way better than what we can get with X-Plane 10, or even FSX + ASN. Just don't forget to enable the turbulence level in the "Advanced" launch menu. I believe this could go into the sim menu bar, somewhere under "Climate".

Then, the flight dynamics - my last acquisition for FSX was the Majestic Q-400, probably the most advanced turboprop ever built for MSFS. And guess what? The MSQ400 runs it's FDM externally using JSBSim! Does this sound common?

Ok, I definitely have a flooded TNCM :( It's a shame, because that is one of my favorites.

Sorry about that. I've verified a fix to scenery generation tools, and TNCM should be good next time we generate scenery.
