3.0.0 rc2 on Win7

Postby mhab » Mon Feb 03, 2014 12:31 pm

Hello

I downloaded the Win7 FG 3.0.0 setup
If I install it, it says "ceating directories ..." and will immediately create a scenery subdir in the desired installation folder and then seemingly hang for 10 min before anything happens again ...
Only process active in some way in that phase is "_setup64.tmp".

I thought it will do nothing anymore, was already posting this message and then found that it "woke up" after 10min.

No idea what happens in those 10 min before setup really starts ...

The setup takes another 10 min to finish after the "misterious" break

Hi,

Could you re-install FG 3.0.0 RC but disable your antivirus before starting the installation and report if it's better ?
If yes, I would add a message in the Windows installer asking for people to disable their antivirus during FG installation

@Hooray: I know ;-) but in your link the installer end by a crash, here it just freeze for a long time, but doesn't crash. I would like to know if the source of the problem is the same.

What kind of advice can we write to our Windows users ?
1) disable your antivirus
2) for terrasync, select a folder where you have write access

Hello

I uninstalled FG 3.0.0 rc2, disbabled the McAfee and installed it again
1st try mentioned above was with "force 32 bit installation"
new try was without this option, rest identical

Difference:
7min hang
4min rest of setup

So it was remarkably faster.

The 7 min of hang is still really suspicious... During these 7 min nothing happen ? no FGData decompression ? no binary installation ?
How looks your CPU charge ? is it working at 100% ? how looks the process in your task manager ?

I would just add a big red BOLD warning to disable any running antivirus software, or the installation may take ages, as all the data will need to be scanned - and that the installler may appear unresponsive then.

As I said in the beginning the only FG related process which is doing something during the seemingly hanging is "_setup64.tmp"
CPU is almost idle during the 7 min "hanging"

If there is any decompression going on I don't know/can't tell ...

decompressing the archive would be typically slowed down by antivirus software running in the background which is hooking DLL injection hooks to trigger the AV scanner automatically, unless it's been disabled
