+it causes a lot of lag if you're on a slow connection... even small gifs can amount to several mBs! Also, people would abuse it to show their 1337sor wrrryy-pics

The named reasons are indeed the ones that made me decide to not permit animated avatars. The whole purpose of those avatars was (besides creating a virtual personality) to decrease the distraction due to offtopic images (like those in some of your (former) signatures). In various discussion, I came to the conclusion that most people (including myself) see images beside text as less distractive compared to images between text.

I am open to feedback, as always, so please shout if you think you have a legitimate reason why animated avatars should be permitted.

PS: I am very positive about all avatars so far. There were a couple of non-FG/Aviation images, but their "parent" changed them quickly after a warning from my side. Excellent!

Hi... i got a question...
i've been asked by pm about my avatar by somebody... i wont say who...
the person asked me about the pic that i have... if the person in the pic was me...
and i am like nah! no way!... so the person told me... that i may have some trouble as you only accept a personal pic or a FG/Aviation realated pic... :(
but... i use it as it's very "patriotic" for me as i am a Honduran and the image have my country flag... so... even that way... do i need to change it? :?

You could use a custom Honduran livery if you are too much ugly for a face photo

Great to see avatars on FG forum

JCHND I think it is just fine if it represents you. I recognized the flag immediately knowing where you were from.

And I found out a little trick about the avatars. The image can be any size. Mine is 1440x873. But just enter 100x100 or any dimension you want in the box and it will work.

Usually, I also try to hide my face from the internet... though more for commercial reasons. I want to get hired by some company one day, and although I try not to be too much of an idiot on the web I fear that someone may read things in a wrong context. Of course if you try really hard you can find me on the internet... but at least there is one line of defense between me and my potential boss/co-worker/whatever.

anyway, JcHnd, I think your avatar looks great! I also wondered if that was you but I was too lazy to ask :P

edit: awright, if my avatar isn't flightgear-ish enough I'll remove it

Yup. This one technology teacher of mine once gave us an assignment to find out as much as we could about him. One kid who was a complete genius somehow got his passwords and credit card number and all. I have no idea how he did it. Completely beyond me. That teacher said he has to change all his passwords and numbers etc. every year and it is annoying but, he still does the assignment because it is so interesting.

oh, it isn't that hard
I, for example, know how I could get all the passwords you save into your firefox... just give me your computer for 30 seconds :D (a few friends and I used to do that to each other, hack our social network sites and rename the victim into something like *princessXXX*. Was fun while it lasted, especially because on some networks you can only change your name every 3 month  )

however, I don't know how to get the credit card numbers without a proper keylogger!
