I suspect allowing to put the full path in the iframe could be enough.

We don't want to allow full paths, as that'd allow anyone to embed whatever page they like

But, there are soft-porn and other stuff like that on vimeo and youtube, so, I don't think this makes anything safer.

While you are correct in that, there is also more to an iframe that just viewing content.

Pretty much, yes.

If spambots can be a problem and undoubtedly some forum readers would follow those links, consider what possibly could happen if spambots discretely could insert the content of malicious websites (with malicious code) into posts. While it would look like just a (stolen) screenshot, it could potentially do quite some harm.

While most people are protected in more than one way, some probably are not for one reason or another.
