Feature Request: pronoun tags

Postby merspieler » Tue May 23, 2023 8:43 am

Is is possible to add a pronouns field to the profile and show it next to the posts?

Hi,

That might indeed be a good suggestion by Alan, as we don't show the profile info on small-screen devices, while the signature is visible there.

+1 for merspieler's suggestion: I think a dedicated field for preferred third-person pronouns is a good idea, following the lead of GitHub and many other sites. People can always add pronouns to their .sig as well, as Alan mentioned, but a dedicted field shows that we care at least as much about gender identity as we do about callsigns, and makes FlightGear more welcoming for a wider diversity of users.

-1. If someone really wants, then signature would be the best place for it. This is first. Second, a while ago you was talking about, or someone else was, about, gender neutral terms, which are basically... nosense but ok.

As a former English prof (who taught History of the English Language in university), I can assure you that they're not nonsense: English has used "they" as a gender-neutral singular pronoun since at least the 1300s, and you will find examples in many well-known authors over the centuries — it's much more natural than awkward constructions like "he/she" (which the prescriptive grammarians tried to force on us).

It's funny how the prescriptive grammarians accepted "you" becoming singular, but fought (and continued to fight) "they".

You just gave me an idea, until we've got a pronoun tag, I'll just use the call sign field :D ... after all, that's what I want people to call me.

Gijs, I don't see any harm in adding that. people who don't set it, it's not shown anyway but as David said, it's about showing that we care about such things.
If you see a reason not to add it, please let me know (I won't accept "there's a DIY way" as a reason)

It's funny how the prescriptive grammarians accepted "you" becoming singular, but fought (and continued to fight) "they".

It has to do how a change happens - usually they're not proposed, they just happen to arise in a subculture, people like them and use them more and more and afterwards people who compile the grammar adapt to how speakers use things.

People are quite fine with neologisms like 'googling' - the reason language changes are accepted or not has little to do with antiquity, that's a red herring. Whether a form has been used in the 17th century is just not relevant for any decision whether I should use it now.

I couldn't tell you why, but "they" sounds plural or a collective to me. I suppose my early education is responsible.
"They" is only used to refer to multiples of something. I think the only time I ever use that word is when I am referring to a collective of they or them.
Bill and Jane think FG is a game, they just don't get it. When I here it used to reference a single person it sounds wrong, A single person isn't a they, they are a thing, it, him, her, he, she, etc. I'm not saying that is correct, but it is what my mind is wired to believe. I am not sure that can ever change at this point, even if I accept it and use it accordingly.

If you noticed, did use they to refer to a "group" single persons or a single person? I think that is about as close as I can get tu using they for a single entity.

In that case, you can use they for us :D

If you wanna discuss the use of singular they, feel free to open an off-topic thread.
I wanna get that pronoun field or get an answer to why we really shouldn't do it.

Hi,

Just a quick response from a conference in the US. All I said was that using the signature automatically makes it visible on all screen sizes ;-) I'll see about adding a profile field when I'm at my laptop.

Done, you can now set your preferred pronouns through the user control panel, if you want to.
