Discource for our Forum?

Postby austin » Wed Oct 05, 2022 3:57 pm

Dear forum moderators,

I would like to propose we could use Discourse for our forum, which looks more modern and organised.
https://github.com/discourse/discourse

Re: Why don't we host this forum in fosshost?

Hi,

How would changing to a different hosting provider have any impact on the forum "looking modern and organised"?

Regards,

Gijs

PS: Even if it would, they're not accepting new applications anyway.

Oo... I think this was a misconception.
So actually, I have seen Garuda Linux's forum (https://forum.garudalinux.org/) which has a nice UX, and it was hosted by FOSShost,
but now, when I looked at fedora's forum (https://ask.fedoraproject.org/) , which also looks similar(It is not hosted by FOSShost).
Now I understand.
I thought the user interface was provided by the hosting service.
Sorry...

Anyways, how do you like Garuda Linux's forum UI?
I think this forum's UI looks quite old.

It took me some time to join this forum cause there was a slight hesitation because of the UX of the forum.
And I have been using FlightGear for two years.
So a better UI would attract a younger population.
I understand more people means more load on the servers, but this is still something you could consider.

And chase away the old and knowledgeable people. A forum is about information sharing, not about a fancy UI and lots of pictures, likes and blinking messages. All that helps you nothing if you don't get meaningful answers to your questions.

I don't think any of those Instagram folks(I don't use IG, btw) would even be using FlightGear.
And even if any of the youngsters would be using FlightGear, they would be wise enough to know about open-source projects like FG.
That being said, any new users that FlightGear would be getting will be youngsters.

And I believe the more popular FG gets, the more we will be getting support for development.
So don't think having a better-looking forum would hurt.
I believe it would just be a boost for the project.

I really love this open-source project, and I would love to see this getting better and better.

Hey, a "youngster" here...
imo the forum is good as it is, simple and clean... in contrast to the two forums you've linked. The 1st one is just cluttered.... and the 2nd one uses discourse which doesn't even load here until I allow 3rd party scripts. If I run across a "forum" with discourse, I go back and look for other sources...
any new users that FlightGear would be getting will be youngsters.

Wrong. There are loads of older folks joining us, some are even retired.

Also note that for actual development of the flightgear core, the right place is the mailing list, not this forum.

I really love this open-source project, and I would love to see this getting better and better.

Yes, me too... but imo better means NOT to rely on external hosts or even proprietary platforms such discord which unfortunately is often the only direct communication method for some "open" source projects... if you ask me, as soon as I need to sign up to a proprietary service to even chat, it's no longer really open.

phpBB may be an older forum but it's simple and just works... I mean, I can even open it in lynx without any problems... I wouldn't want any other forum software and would use phpBB if I were to set up a new forum.
