Density defaults to 1, see preferences.xml. That seemed to work for everyone at that time, but apparently that is still too much...

Hi,

We currently do not support changing the building density through the GUI. If people really want to change it, they can do so through the property browser or preferences.xml, on the basis that such users are competent to back out any change they make.

If people are seeing excessive memory usage, they should switch the random buildings off. Memory usage is a function of the building density and the amount of urban/town scenery that has been loaded, and obviously the definition of "excessive" depends on how much RAM your machine has. We can't therefore provide a useful range for the building density. For some people a density of 0.5 will be too much at KLAX, for others a density of 5.0 will be fine in less populated regions.
