openflight wrote in Tue Dec 10, 2013 3:41 am:I went through your manual, three comments:

-Very good graphics
-Try to make the language a little more formal
-Cross check all info with a real Flight Instructor if possible

Hope you don't mind the criticism.

That said, the manual is one of the nicest I have seen, good work.

I'll second all of that - except for #2.

IMHO, it is the lack of stuffy formalism that makes his manual such a jewel. My vote: Keep it that way!

Jim (JR)

p.s. I took a look at the "new" version 3 today, and everything I said in my prior posting applies to this version as well - and then some! I just need to get more bandages for my chin - every time I read his guide I keep banging it on the floor.

The link does not work, could this be posted to the Wiki please? Maybe under 'getting started' the contents of 'getstart' and also this VFR manual. I am into VFR flying now and really would like to see this.

It was added to fgdata's Docs directory. If your FlightGear is too old to include it, you can obtain it directly from the repository: https://sourceforge.net/p/flightgear/fg ... format=raw

That's a different tutorial. It is located in Switzerland. DeProfundis made his tutorial in USA...

I'm still searching my disks, trying to find it...

Unfortunately, I had no luck. It seems it didn't survive one of my many harddisk crashs.

I found two copies.

A version 2.0 and a version 3.0

If the board lets me upload them, I will.

Nope, can't do that. Here are a couple of MediaFire download links:

Version 2:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/nhc6n1u8g ... 0.pdf/file

Version 3:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/qvwvx9fh7 ... 0.pdf/file

These will stay up for a while. Please copy them to somewhere else safe, just in case.

OK, now can we get this in the FG documentation once and for all?

Just kidding! This is why I keep multiples of terabytes on or near-line, and I save EVERYTHING!

Glad to help.

Those links are likely to stay active for a while. . . . Because I'm a pack-rat and never delete anything without at least two copies squirreled away somewhere - on different drives/servers/media.

However, I would sincerely beg @giji (or whoever else is responsible for the doc's nowadays), to:
1. Archive both of these somewhere on the FG servers where they're publicly available. (Think GitHub, Sourceforge, etc.)
2. Include them, or at least the most recent version, in the FG distro itself.

Hi Jim,

thanks! I'm not sure if we can include all of the image material, as some of it may be copyrighted (e.g. the aerials).
I'll contact Stuart about this as he's our de facto manual maintainer and was apparently involved in a first attempt to get this in fgdata. Ideally we would have the source file(s) as well...

At the very least the 3.0 version is GPL'd.

All the screen shots are from FlightGear itself, and (as far as I know) the other images are from US Government documents that are automatically in the public domain.

I doubt if there are any copyright issues.

As far as the source documents are concerned, you might find a link within the license page of the 3.n manual, or perhaps you can contact deprofundus directly. He may be able to clarify any copyright issues as well.

All I have are the published pdf files.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
