Thermal spawning, ridge wind and weather configuration

Everything related to weather simulation, visuals should be discussed in the shader subforum.

Actually, the whole discussion gave me the incentive to dust off and test my old wave lift code - there's few bugs which need to be fixed, and an update to correctly write the lift, but by and large it's quite good - 45 kt wind at 6000 m altitude riding the wave over the Swiss alps - I guess I did bring that oxygen supply...

noice!
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Wow!
Do one need special settings to generate the waves? Or does it work with default settings (is the wind extrapolated to aloft?)

You'd need the code I fixed today and arrange the situation by hand...

Excellent! Thank you.

Not at this point - consider it 'under development' - I'll give details when it's actually usable without opening the Nasal console and typing custom commands there.

Okay! Thank you for working on this!

Yesterday after our session i had another try at soaring, and despite having no problem in finding thermals, i was not able to consistently center them and gain net altitude. But the reason is bad aviator skills, so i just need to practise more :)

Getting the location of the thermals would enable a nice feature: birds (spawned ai circling upwards as indication seems to often be used)

Actually, that used to be a feature found in FG at some point (in the pre-AW days) - you can still find the corresponding screen shots in the devel list archives, some of the most senior contributors (Curt or Erik) should remember the details. There were even 3D models added for flocks of birds.

Again, all this took place in the pre-AW days and was using the hard-coded "AI thermals" system IIRC.

For the details, see the archives and the commit logs or ask around.

Either way, we should have all the tooling in place to replicate that functionality - for starters, you could even instantiate other gliders and use an adapted version of tanker.nas to seek thermals and circle there. All of this should be possible in Nasal space.

Yesterday i had good thermals with the convection slider a little right of the middle.
That gave broad thermals, core was about 3.5 - 4.5, but the broad thermal was about 1.5. As they were broad, it was easy to stay in and actually gain altitude; so this might also be a good beginner setting.
