lightning - how to ?

Postby gkick » Mon Jul 01, 2019 4:25 am

Hi,

What sort of setup will trigger a thunderstorm with lightning and thunder?
Northern hemisphere bolts tend to be vertical, southern hemishere almost horizontal.
The environment weather scenario just seems to produce a little wind and rain and blue sky,
but nothing else.regardless if 3d clouds or enabled or disabled
Some aircrafts have some thunder or similar.nas file. Are there any settings I am missing?

Thanks

Turn 3D clouds on - you won't get lighting (or rainbows or proper fog) without that on. Then, ensure atmospheric light scattering is on and then finally the Thunderstorm weather scenario is a good one to use - it generates several CBs in the region :)

The nasal scripts are merely to make the thunder sound work with lightning.

lego :
When I choose Thunderstorm weather, FG2018.3.x will generate very nice CBs, I can see it on WX Radar, but after take off FG doesn't load next scenery tiles, no matter terrasync on or off, I have that tiles in terrasync cache. I had similar problem on flight from LZIB to LTAI via DAXNU ROTAR TIGRA LASKO BADOG GIVIS GIRKI TOMBI with strong thunderstorm over Pula (LDPL). When I entered into thunderstorm sector, terrasync scenery download failed, I did not seen any scenery or sea. When I left the area with thunderstorm, terrasync worked again.

it is weird, though... i'd almost be willing to bet that a debug log would turn up something as to why...

@v12, start your FG with --log-level=debug and run a short flight with stormy weather... then post your fgfs.log file to pastebin or put it on your website with a link here so we can take a look at it, please...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

i wish there was an easy way to tell which tile that is... all i saw in your log was about OSM buildings not syncing but i didn't catch anything specific about a tile not syncing... on my system i see similar at times but if i slow down and give it time, the tile generally does load... why it takes so long in some cases, i don't know... i've not had one to not load, though... plus i've got all of the earth here so it isn't a downloading problem in my case... once they're downloaded, they should be fine anyway... try it again with normal clear air and see what happens...

With clear air is all OK, all tiles are loaded fast enough. And in that video is not OSM downloaded from terrasync, but local Slovakia OSM custom scenery loaded from HDD. Problem is only with thunderstorm cells.

It could be the same problem I've encountered two years ago where scenery tiles didn't would stop loading in thunderstorm scenario. Even though Thorsten couldn't reproduce it after experimentation and trial and error the conclusion was it was likely some kind of jam in model loader: https://sourceforge.net/p/flightgear/ma ... /36012957/
It was fixed for me by setting these properties:
#--prop:/sim/rendering/multithreading-mode=AutomaticSelection
#--prop:/sim/rendering/multithreading-mode=CullDrawThreadPerContext
--prop:/sim/rendering/multithreading-mode=CullThreadPerCameraDrawThreadPerContext

sounds like the something backed up or overloaded in the model loader as Mihajlo suggests...

i was speaking of these and the other ones like them... Buildings is an OSM directory and it is trying to sync it even though you may only have custom scenery for that tile...

understandable, really... considering how much additional work is being done...

Mihajlo's solution works well. Not 100% perfect, but situation is much better. I need make another tests with live METAR and strong storm.
