Sunny but black starry sky

Postby Clive2670 » Thu Feb 22, 2018 7:49 pm

I've never encountered this before, Just started a flight from LSZH time set to noon, it was snowing got above the clouds bright sunshine, and can see the scenery but it is a pitch black sky and the stars are visable!!!! :? Anyone got any ideas why? Flightgear is performing normally though

FWIW: the stars are always projected on the skydome... use the infrared viewer to see similar in black and white ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Yes I sometimes see them during the day wkitty42.....BUT I mean, above the cloud base (It was daylight on the ground) The WHOLE sky was black as night, Stars out and the sun too!!! Scenery was illuminated like it is during the day VERY weird, I know I should have done a screenshot and posted but didn't think of it at the time. Restarted at EGLL all was fine..So at a loss of what caused it! Will say everything else functioned as normal on the simulator during this hiccup!

on one of my astronomy programs, we can turn the atmosphere off and see similar... based on that, my eWAG would be that the atmosphere shader wasn't running but i don't know enough and it is too late now, to look deeper... logs and console output but an interesting situation, to say the least :)

I think this was a one off, as it hasn't happened since! Oh well Flightgear will sometimes throw something into the pot just to keep you amused!

Did you do a spaceflight before?

Somehow settings can get 'stuck' when you use Earthview, end the FG session and start with basic weather.

(Theoretically a METAR could have mis-reported an abysmally low pressure - that would have also given you a very thin atmosphere - but also have affected your flight dynamics quite a bit...)

No Thorsten I didn't, Sadly I haven't quite got my head around the complexaties of the shuttle!! The METAR showed a fairly "normal" 1005 hPa at the time of the flight, And the plane (777) performed as it should, So I was at a loss. Not an issue to me as it hasn't "shown" itself again!

Then I don't really have an explanation left... maybe a weird one-off quirk.

I've seen black skies during daytime in the past when the color value became a floating point NaN.

Shouldn't happen in ALS because of several clamps in critical positions...

Should it occur again, please make a note of time and air pressure - otherwise I don't know what to suggest for now, so let's leave it be.
