Flight simulation combining CFD and FlightGear

Postby IWABUCHI » Sat Nov 23, 2019 3:04 pm

Dear FG users,

I'm a graduate school student at Tohoku University in Japan.
My major is aerospace engineering, and I am studying about low-level turbulence around airports.

My study methods are below.

1. Simulation of low-level turbulence by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
2. Using CFD results, conduction a flight simulation of turbulence.

I want to use FlightGear in this study.

Is it possible to incorporate CFD results into FG?
If this method is possible, I want to know it.

Best,
Iwabuchi.

There's an existing PhD thesis about CFD-generated turbulence in FG, in particular propagating an aircraft through a low-level detailed windfield.

I guess your best course of action would be to find it and read how it was done - it sounds pretty similar to what you want to do.

Thank you for your reply.

Have you ever seen the thesis ?
Where is the thesis, FG's home page ? FG's wiki ? or FG's forum ....?
I do not know which web site and keywords to search it.

Yes, I have seen it (might still have it somewhere on my harddisk, but I can't find it quickly...) - there also is a record on the FG mailing list, it was discussed at some point and the link was posted.

You're in academia and looking for a PhD thesis published on a research subject you're doing. Surely there's search engines in your field that finds that kind of thing, and surely you can come up with a set of keywords that describe the topic of your own thesis (the basic idea seems to be very similar). The ability to locate other people's research work is part of the academic skill-set, and I will not do that for you, sorry. Ask your supervisor or your colleagues for how to do that, they'll know. :D

Wow, I'm impressed! Could someone do that for me next time I have a question?

I was able to find the paper.
Perhaps the the thesis you mention is "S. Giersch's paper and related work".
https://sourceforge.net/p/flightgear/mailman/message/36006979/

But, I can not read contents of the thesis, there is no PDF file.
So, I'm going to contact him directly.

Thank you for your help.
