FG3.7 getting worse

Postby Foxtrot15 » Mon Jan 04, 2016 6:54 am

Hi,

So far, there have been increased problems in FG3.7. Firstly, smoke rendering was broken. Secondly, we lost the option to choose parking again. Thirdly, terrasync is not working for major American airports. Fourth, FG now crashes after pressing "run".

Is this typical of a development version?

If you just want a usable FG version, stay clear of the development versions, this can happen.

If you want to contribute to debugging and testing (which would be very welcome), please assemble as many details as you can (in particular e.g. what commit broke what for you) and report this to the mailing list, not in the forum, and be prepared to answer follow up questions or compile a debug version for a backtrace.

You do like the rest of us do... you learn from those who already know.

It's mainly a question of attitude - there are people who will talk you through getting a backtrace or doing git bisecting if you're just interested in learning. It's actually not that bad.

(How do you think I learned to deal with Git? Mostly through Anders explaining to me what to do. And whatever I know of SVN is because Edward took infinite patience in explaining what I have to do to solve my problems).

It's quite normal for development versions to get worse before they get better.

Importantly by using 3.7 and finding and reporting problems before the release (ideally to the dev list) will considerably increase the chance of getting all these sort of bugs ironed out before the release.

What you could do is to keep the previously downloaded nightlies - so if you find a broken one just go back to a good one.

Concerning Terrasync, when did you have this issue?
All services should now be normal again, since december 29th or so.

For terrasync, I think the problem started on 1 January.

Thankfully, the latest 3.7 is starting to improve, no longer crashes...

I'm in KBOS right now, never been there before and tried JFK just before. So it may be your local configuration?

Well here is an idea for anyone that wants to maybe help test without wanting to do bit dissecting or running debug versions and backtraces.

Dynamic data
    FlightGear_fgdata/add-ons/TerraSync/
    FlightGear_fgdata/fgmembers_fgdata/

FlightGear Nightlies - a dated folder for each version you try.
    FlightGear_nightly/{date}/

Install each nightly (the smaller 37mb exe, not the full version) from here http://download.flightgear.org/builds/nightly/ into it's own dated folder, IE 20160104 for today's folder date
Then just tell flightgear nightlies where it's fgdata resides.

You get all the good new developments and bugs.
You have any older copies in case a version is completely trashed, as long as you don't delete them.
Keeping them dated helps with knowing when and where the bug was introduced. More people more refined timeline.
Benefits you and the developers in some form or fashion.

This is not a complete how to, it is just an idea based on how I manage testing development branch of FG
