3.7 testing required: Fly by view Doppler effect

Postby sanhozay » Sat Sep 19, 2015 4:43 pm

If you are running a 3.7 copy of Flightgear, either pulled from Git or from a nightly build, your help is requested to test sound in the fly by view.

An issue may have been introduced by a change to Simgear on August 26th 2015. The symptom is that the aircraft sound in the fly by view is a constant pitch; it doesn't have the "Eeeeeeoooooowwwwmmmmm" sound produced by the Doppler effect. The problem may affect some users and not others, so your help is requested to assess who has a problem and who does not. On your next flight, all you have to do is switch to fly by view and listen to the sound.

If you are able to test, please provide the following information:

* Flightgear version, in particular the date it was updated, e.g. a nightly build date or date of Git pull
* Operating system and version, e.g. Ubuntu 15.04, Windows 10, Mac OS Yosemite
* Sound card make and model/chipset, e.g. NVIDIA Corporation MCP61
* Aircraft (it shouldn't make a difference but we may as well know it)
* Whether the Doppler effect is present

If you have a nightly build from before August 26th, it would also be useful to test with that version and then test a later version.

I just installed the current nightly "built 18 hrs ago" and ran the fly by.
Now I'm not sure what I heard before and what I am hearing now. I had an effect this time as in it sounded like the volume increased and then decreased but I don't think it did any stereo manipulation such as right speaker to left. I can't say it did that before either.

It's a pitch change rather than a volume change or move in a stereo field. It might help to stand outside the room where the computer is; you'll lose all sense of stereo and the pitch change is a lot more obvious.

If the Doppler is not working, the sound in fly by view is basically the same as the sound in model view or chase view without yaw.

Thanks to all those of you who have done the test. Keep them coming please.

OK, i confirm,
first test with pre August 26th = Doppler effect working
second test with nightly a couple days old = Doppler effect not working

Here is a third test
OS fresh Debian install
FG download_and_compile script next install (3.7)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 240
c172p
Doppler effect not working

EDIT: I'm not sure why I balked at what I was hearing the second time around, it was obvious today that it wasn't working as before.

OS is Windows
Card is integrated graphics for the B950 processor.
Installed build is build 2047, current is 2053.
2053 - 2047 is 6 days, so post August 26.
Doppler not working on A330-243, nor is TerraSync.

OK, thanks all. That's probably conclusive enough to justify reversing the change.

The only question that remains is why it's OK for wkitty42: could you confirm when your Simgear was pulled?

AFAIK my script, a slightly modified download_and_compile.sh, pulls and compiles everything when i run it... i used to run it daily and i've never had a problem with the doppler in the fly-by view... my modification to the d_a_c script are only to use variables for the locations to download from so they are all at the top of the script and easy to find if they need to be changed... aside from that, i'm currently using v2.33 of the script because i've not updated it recently and that was the last one i pulled from FGMeta back in May 2015... when i ran my test the other day, i ran my updatefgnext script first and then ran fgfs after everything was updated... i took my version and revision values from the help->about screen in fgfs...

[time passes for research]

i have one script, updatefgnext, that calls several others or does the work directly... the first thing is that FGMeta is updated... then FGAddon and finally my modified download_and_compile.sh is executed with all output being redirected to a log file... plib/master is updated and compiled, then openrti/master is updated and compiled followed by simgear/next being updated, compiled and installed... then flightgear/next is updated, compiled and installed followed by fgdata/next... i also bring in FGRun, FGO, ATCPIE, terragear/scenery/ws2.0 and terragear gui... the only one that is failing to compile at this time is terragear/scenery/ws2.0 in poly2ogr.cxx...

[EDIT]

i just ran a diff on my download_and_compile.sh to compare it with the one in fgmeta and i see a whole section for OpenSceneGraph (osg) has been added... i don't know that this is involved in the doppler effect problem, though... AFAIK my fgfs has never used OSG but i will update my download_and_compile script and test again...

If you go into your simgear directory and run the following in a terminal, you'll see the date of the most recent commit.

Code: Select all
git log

I have exactly the same error. Don't know what it is yet but it's not your script.

Edit: The build server has the same: build.flightgear.org:8080/job/SimGear/lastBuild/console
