Screenshot Challenge: Mountains

Postby Thorsten » Mon Oct 17, 2011 9:00 am

There are many really impressive mountains in the world, from Everest to Denali, from Mt. Blanc to Mt. Rainier.

Let's try for some really dramatic mountain shots! Weather and season are up to you - whether it's a single peak pushing through a cloud layer, or a whole mountain range in morning light, or the misty mountains; whether you're happy with the default rock textures or want to try your own rock textures to capture the local conditions better, whether you like to show rock in summer or glaciers and snow in winter - just show us some places worth flying to!

I quickly took one of Mt. Fuji at sunrise.

I wish I could take one of sunset, too, but sadly, FG's skies aren't ready for such an awesome shot just yet. (EDIT: This is for version 2.4; I know it's amazing in GIT, but I don't have it, sadly..)

EDIT: I didn't really know what exactly to present, so I'll probably post a more serious and better submission later on.

Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

Despite having over 1700 posts here, I am not even close to being the most skilled guy here... I'm just words and bad drawing, not experience. :P

How's sunset different from sunrise? *is puzzled*

As for the skies not being ready for a decent sunset - I'm taking this personal, I've spent whole nights on this :D

(that's now available - newest version of the skydome scattering shader, see the forum thread)

Since I'm posting here anyway - I forgot to mention that the challenge runs till Friday 28th!

Identical position in world, different time and angle:

It's more of a symbolic thing... You know, Japan's name is often translated as the Land of the Rising Sun, not the Setting Sun...

Haha... I meant on my 2.4 version; I don't have GIT or the updated shaders... :(

I don't want to bias Thorsten's judging, but wow, that's up there in the top tier of great FlightGear screen shots!

fantastic screen shot, if you have a high res version, one should definitely turn it into a splash screen for FG!

Thanks, the full size is 1440x829 which can be seen by clicking on the small image in the post. My current monitor has max resolution of 1440x900 so that capture is pretty much as high as I can go.

What I think is really great is that other than the custom scenery that is just stock 2.4 with shaders on and local weather set to metar. Really goes to show how far flightgear has progressed graphically over the past year or two I think.

cheers

I took a fly around the Caucusus Mountains of Georgia and Southern Russia, some really dramatic scenery there. There you will find Mount Elbrus which is believed to be the highest mountain in all Europe (18,510 feet).

Here I'm flying a little too close to the side of the mountain really:

Here, Elbrus towers above the cloud layer:

I also visited Mount Damavand in Iran (18,406 feet), but I couldn't really get a decent picture. The peak is very sharp in real life and also in the Flightgear terrain:
