Screenshot Challenge: Airports from above

Postby Thorsten » Fri Sep 16, 2011 1:56 pm

Take a shot of your favourite airport from above - either from inside the cockpit or from an external view, on a bright sunny day or with the airport being just visible through fog, either a small country airfield or a major international hub - just highlight some terrific location to fly into!

Time for this challenge will be exceptionally 2 weeks since I won't be around in the last September week!

What airport is it? In your first picture part of the runway seems to be missing. Why not put on the urban shader to make it look even better?

NAS Santa Ana, California.

I had this on stock and while not very advanced (and with some ugly object duplication) this is one of the best preserved WWII US Navy blimp bases in FG scenery (sadly less preserved in RL now).

The hangars are not yet in the scenery repository.

LFPG, De Gaulle Airport, Paris.

Various views from around 2,000 feet.

This airport has some of the best modelled buildings in Flightgear, on the same level as Chubu Centrair and Gatwick.

Too late?

I'll remake this picture in a month or so. I'm currently re-texturing the entire cockpit and creating new lightmaps, so it should look a lot better by then :)

Nice one! I wonder what inspired you... :)
The only thing that bothers me is the "knick" in the panel, left of the EICAS. For some reason it annoys me (so does the taskbar in the bottom!)

Hi Gijs,

The "knick" is the transition between the two monitors, there is also one to the left, but it doesn't show so much (you may remember from FSweekend that I have the side monitors positioned at a slight angle, so that in reality it looks quite natural. In retrospect, I was really surprized that the three images lined up so well, because I had only very roughly adjusted my FOV. I had set the task bar to autohide, but it looks like I was a little to quick here for it to hide again, as I wanted to get the airport in view.

Re inspiration; yeah there is a bit coming from your pic, but it was also a combination of finally getting things to run (after reinstalling the whole linux distro after my joystick calibration problem), some new snapshot tools I discovered, and my own dissatisfaction of not being able to catch the whole image using the conventional way of making screenshots. ...

Cheers,
Durk

Exceptionally not:

Time for this challenge will be exceptionally 2 weeks since I won't be around in the last September week!

(I've just arrived in Japan and want to sleep rather than pose a screenshot challenge...)
