The Yokosuka K5Y was a two-seat unequal-span biplane trainer (Allied reporting name: "Willow") that served in the Imperial Japanese Navy during the World War II. Due to its bright orange paint scheme (applied to all Japanese military trainers for visibility), it earned the nickname "aka-tombo", or "red dragonfly", after a type of insect common throughout Japan.

It entered service in 1934 as Navy Type 93 Intermediate Trainer K5Y1 with fixed tail-skid landing gear, and remained in use throughout the war.

Thanks guys. :D

I've been using the new dds textures recently arrived in Git. Maybe that makes a difference. Certainly snow and rocks look amazing up close. To use them see the README-textures-ng in your /data folder. I just added this line to my .fgfsrc

Code: Select all
 --prop:/sim/rendering/materials-file=materials-dds.xml

This week's picks are

============================= 1 =============================

Image

by Sealbhach

Why I like this shot:

It manages to catch a combination of weather and skydome shader that actually looks very natural, which is not easy to get. The shot is taken against the sun, so the plane is not visible in as high contrast as it could be, and that focuses the attention of the viewer more on the surroundings, but in this case this is no loss as there is a lot of detail in the background.

Why I like this shot:

This shot tells a story - no text is needed. I like the concept of the formation flight very much, and it looks just like a casual view over the shoulder of a pilot. Since the background is rather featureless, it directs the attention of the viewer towards the planes, which are shown in high detail with nice reflections and structure on the wing, so the whole impression is very realistic.

(How's the formation actually done? Some AI scenario, a multiplayer event,...?)

Why I like this shot:

I am always fond of shots from inside the cockpit, because they are more difficult to get well done, but also more rewarding because they draw you more into the action. As in the previous case, the picture tells a story in itself. A somewhat negative impression is created by the too simple to appear real texturing of the cockpit inside, but the contrail and cloudlayer glimpsed on the outside are nice effects, and the overall impression fits well enough.

The formation was built using AI Scenarios. I will make them available in fgdata in due course.

Sorry can't help it. :twisted: I will try making crappier pictures in future. I quite liked your first and second pictures, of the Spitfires, and the last pic of the plane landed in Reims.
